Other House Sit Sites

@Snowbird

Are you referring to the new ‘booking’ fees, the adjustments, or perhaps both? Cause yes, do appear to be some rather obvious legal imbalances..likely just a (highly problematic) scare tactic. In practice, if THS actually tried to extract unlimited sums from it’s customers on such grounds, I can’t imagine it would do anything other than backfire in most European courts.

Technically speaking… @adelia how does one port their reviews to other platform’s?

Mindmyhouse sounded interesting but when I looked there are only 5 sits in Canada. Wah :frowning:
Currently not going abroad. Hopefully someday again.

“You will reimburse us for losses…” I’d like to know what sort of scenario they envision here, a third party bringing a claim because of something a member did?

We found MMH people super flaky and non committal. The management team are very nice but the system is loose so no accountability. It is very cheap to join though. Quite a few pet sitting FB pages in SEA and Türkiye have been good. Some are invite only which probably helps with quality of sits/members. #whatahooha

@buttercup I don’t understand your question. I’m just suggesting that those who have personal experience with other housesitting sites may like to share that information. I think it’s timely as, based on today’s posts, many members are unhappy with TrustedHousesitters right now and may consider switching to another site. I don’t see how it relates to the section you’ve included. No need for a response from you, to elaborate.

I’m on Aussie Housesitters, it’s basic but ok and cheap.

Think they’re referring to vet bills and now also emergency home repairs, at least that’s what the mega-thread on reddit are discussing right now, since people are cancelling auto-renew and subscriptions. A lot of suggestions there if considering exploring alternatives

I don’t know about other platforms, but on MMH they have something called “bring my reputation.” If you want an example, I do have an active listing on MMH with imported reviews (it’s same Christmas dates as my THS listing, so it should be easy to find!)

I didn’t notice this. They probably wouldn’t need to terrify people by implying that you could be sued to high heaven if they’d only enforce their own rules and suspend memberships – both homeowners and sitters – when they breached the terms.

Couple things I find helpful are:

  1. Saved searches, with notifications turned on in the App
  2. Favoriting listings I like: I seem to get notifications on these even faster than via saved searches, so I periodically browse listings in areas of interest & favorite those that seem promising. Again, you need the app downloaded & notifications turned on.
  3. Save some generic intro text on your phone to pop into applications & then edit/personalize: saves time for applications on competitive locations/listings.

I’ve been using Nomador since 2016 to ooh for sits in France and have had some excellent experiences. It has helped that I speak French fluently. The site is clunkier and the information homeowners provide isn’t as well organized. Some homeowners are slow to respond and there are less sits. On the other hand, I’m currently completing a 3-week repeat sit and couldn’t ask for better - clear information and an outstanding host.

Below is what we use, anyone is welcome to DM me about them:

THS - In total we’ve gained 108 FREE months from referrals to date. Want to know how? DM me. It means the extra fee’s don’t hit us until the year 2030, phew!

ROVER for PAID sits - we only put ourselves on there less than 2 weeks ago, and got our first booking within 4 days. Just for 1-night but that’s the reason we joined, to fill the 1-2 night gaps.

PAWSHAKE for PAID sits - again, we put ourselves on there less than 2 weeks ago and got our first booking within 7 days. Just for 1 night, but that’s why we joined, to fill the 1-2 night gaps.

HousesittersUK as a free sitter (but there are paid sitters on there too) - we’ve had some great sits via here, and we get asked to sit by a huge amount of people, we turn owners down daily, in favour of THS.

HomeExchange - TEEHEEHEE!!! We’ve never ever swapped our home yet, but that’s what the site orginally was. TEEHEEHEE… we earned 1900 points within 2 months of joining (which is a free 2 week stay in normal house/flat, or 1 week in a villa). DM me for how.

TooGoodToGo - for VERY VERY VERY cheap food - it’s a food app designed to reduce waste, we use it very regularly. It’s worldwide, and in the UK includes GREGGS, COSTA, KRISPY CREME, ALDI, MORRISONS, as well as small independent places too. It’s fantastic! We use is all the time now.

Anyone is welcome to DM me, you know I love a perk teeheehee

Money makes enforcement unnecessary; why punish a wrongdoer when you can sue and bill him instead?

No Costa are not covered because you always have additional cost due to a sit

A sitte should get paid at least for her expenses

I’ve been a member of Home Exchange for years, it is my backstory for finding THS (can refer). For me I’ve already decided to use that site more, incl offer to petsit.

I might also use Rover and similar more. Ofc in addition to previous hosts and repeat sits.

:star: Best Platforms for Long House Sits (1–6 Months)

1. MindMyHouse

Best for: Very long sits (1–6 months+), rural/remote properties

Why:

  • Homeowners often list months-long sits for farm, homestead, or seasonal caretaking.

  • Smaller community = less competition for sitters.

  • Very inexpensive annual fee.

2. HouseCarers

Best for: Retirees, snowbird sits, multi-month assignments

Why:

  • Many owners (especially in the U.S. and Canada) look for sitters while they travel long-term.

  • Lots of 2–6 month sits in shoulder seasons (winter in warm states, summer in northern regions).

3. Nomador

Best for: Europe & worldwide long sits

Why:

  • French-based platform; European homeowners commonly take long holidays.

  • Many 1–3 month sits, sometimes longer

Could you please explain how to ‘port your THS reviews’?

I don’t know if I can give a direct link on this forum without the comment being deleted, but if you web search “mind my house bring my reputation” the page should show up as one of the top results. Also if you want to see an example of the ported reviews, you can find my listing (linked in my profile) on the MMH site as well with all my reviews copied over. They’re called Testimonials on MMH.

The imported testimonials are clearly marked as being verified and external, so they do differ from references. One big thing to know is that I have the option to delete individual imported testimonials, so any person could presumably filter out any bad reviews from being imported to their MMH account. However, I can’t edit my “total completed sits” count, so missing imported reviews are detectable.

A new house sitter option based in the UK is being developed and is expected to go live by the end of this month. Search The Guardian Tribe on Facebook. They posted this yesterday:

Good morning everyone, what a wild twenty four hours it has been. Yesterday something shifted and we felt it in a big way.

Our page suddenly exploded with new energy and the numbers honestly left us speechless.

Views jumped to 25,308 and almost six hundred new people joined our community in one day.

That does not happen by accident. Something in the house and pet sitting world changed yesterday

Yep, there was a change and many feel it wasn’t for the better for members here.

I’m not really worried about the numbers of sitters or homeowners, actually. If people from THS decide to go elsewhere, the numbers will change. I’m more worried about having the same features.
