You don’t have to read very far to see that pillows are a sore subject, pain in the neck, issue for sitters.
So if I were to go buy some pillows, what should I get? Some options:
o Feather/down
o Memory foam (Like a Chevy…”Like a rock”)
o Shredded foam (MyPillow, for example)
o Anything, as long as it’s new
o Something else?
You know @KDdid pillows really are a tricky little thing. I’ve learned the hard way that everyone has an opinion, and no single one will ever make everyone happy.
Stu is all about feather/down (70/30) — if it’s not soft and squishy, he’s not impressed — and I’m a medium-latex fan because I like support without feeling like I’ve plonked my head on a brick. Between the two of us, we’ve figured out a simple approach that keeps the bed looking nice and mostly keeps guests happy.
Three fresh, good-quality options usually do the trick:
– a lovely feather/down,
– a medium latex,
– and a comfy synthetic for anyone who wants hypoallergenic or just something reliable.
If you’re only doing two, go with latex + synthetic — it covers the widest range of sleepers and avoids that classic “oh no, I’m stuck with this pillow all week” moment.
Really, it’s just about giving people a bit of choice, a bit of comfort, and a bed that feels welcoming rather than a field of potential complaints.
I’ve stayed at a couple of Air BnBs recently that have had wool bedding and I loved it! The mattress was full of wool, and I don’t think it was sprung at all, so firm like a futon mattress. Pillows and duvet lovely and light, but also warm.
It’s subjective. Why don’t you try a few different ones out? It can take a while to get used to memory pillows, not everyone gets along with them.
Fine to travel with a pillow if you’ve a car & sitting in your own country but I wouldn’t bother if sitting abroad
I’m allergic to feathers so I appreciate when HOs have alternatives. I bring my own pillow (and bedding) when I travel by car. When I travel overseas, I bring allergy pillow covers which help some, but usually just end up sleeping without a pillow or buying one there.
We have 6 or 8 pillows of differing fills and weights. A couple are memory foam, a couple are “down alternative” fill and 2 are huge. None are down or MyPillow products though we might try down again. All are in freshly washed pillow protectors. We leave these available for sitters to fuss over. Our personal pillows are stored away when we leave.
Just please don’t cover the bed with 6 or 8 pillows! What is the point in that trend. I just have to take all but two off, and put them in the corner of the room.
Why do people go so overboard with pillows these days?
We went overboard as a natural consequence of our quest for the perfect Goldilocks pillow. It was a long and arduous but ultimately successful journey resulting in us each having entirely different pillows and a pile of rejects.
The rejects are our guest pillows. Sitters, being treated like guests in our house, are burdened with picking through the daunting pile of guest pillows. Maybe I need to add the task of making a pillow selection to the responsibility section of our profile along with a few photos of our pillow pile?
The best pillows I’ve used are latex foam. They are bouncy, unlike memory foam that feels hard after you’ve settled in. I offer several choices, though.
I find memory foam and feather/down to be the most uncomfortable pillows ever. Latex or wool is fabulous. This just goes to show everyone is different, so you will never please everyone all of the time.
