Thank you so much for starting this thread, and keeping it updated along the way.
It has been absolutely amazing to follow your visit to Scotland, and to see everyone’s replies, it’s allowed me to see my homeland through the eyes of a visitor and gain some new-found appreciation for the country.
This thread will be so helpful for any future Forum members who come here looking for some inspiration should they be staying in Edinburgh or Glasgow. I know it’s inspired me to visit Edinburgh during my time off at the end of the year!
I’m aboard my flight now, happily next to an empty seat. And as I walked to my gate, a full rainbow made an appearance. That sums up how I feel about my first visit to Scotland.
Also saw my first plaid airplane, LOL, and a lovely clock.
@Shannon, look what I stumbled across on my last night in Glasgow, LOL.
There was a smashing supermarket right by my hotel. I spent a lot of time browsing their wide variety of biscuits, sweets, hygiene items and such, because I love looking at other countries’ products. They actually booted me out, because I went in a second time, after a late dinner, and didn’t realize they were closing. I could’ve spent a lot more time there.
For folks who might end up in Glasgow and would be interested in a good restaurant, I recommend The Butterfly and The Pig. Great atmosphere, friendly folks and tasty food. I had their holiday roast dinner and it was enough to feed a small family. I could make only a dent in it. They have an interesting setup, with different parts that are a restaurant, tea room or bar. I definitely want to try the other parts if I’m in Glasgow again. https://thebutterflyandthepig.com/
OMG, shows how long I have been away - I never knew! Two of my favourite things combined. Now I know what to ask my daughter to send us for Christmas! You will now also understand why the Scots have such a sweet tooth
Loving this @Maggie8K and @Shannon! I’m a huge Iron Brew jelly baby fan. I get my supply from our local “Home Bargains” store and they’re very inexpensive.
I was just exchanging holiday greetings with hosts I had in Stratford-upon-Avon in the U.K. and they’ve asked me back. I said yes, because not only is their location idyllic and their dog a terrific companion, they’re wonderful hosts. And I’ll plan so that I can visit Glasgow again and see the Highlands this time. Yippee! I’m chuffed, as you folks say, LOL.
Has anyone done any of the ‘walking tours’ in Edinburgh? If so was it worthwhile? I like walking tours as you get good insight from a local. I’m considering one of those night underground vault tours when I’m there in March. I will be mostly on my own while in Scotland ( sit is only a week) so I’m trying to find ways that are fairly inexpensive and taking in some fascinating history.
I did a walking tour of Mary King’s Close @Catgoddess_99 - it was excellent! Just the right amount of spooky and entertaining! I can’t remember whose tour it was as it was a walk-up to sign up, but it ended with a trip to a very old pub where I had a much-needed nip of whisky!
