Recommended by someone you don’t know?

I — like some other sitters — have been recommended by previous hosts to sit for their family and friends, unsolicited by me. But now I’ve received an invitation from a host, who mentions that another sitter recommended me, but I don’t know that sitter. I even checked out their profile and have no idea who that is.

They’re a sitter with 40 five-star reviews. And the host, in their invitation, said to feel free to get in touch with that sitter, presumably because the sitter would vouch for them, since they’ve hosted only once before on THS.

Odd. Has something like this happened to you? I’m stumped.

Your reputation has obviously spread far and wide.

Or someone made a mistake.

It wasn’t me who recommended you.

And no, this has never happened to me.

Could it be a forum member who doesn’t have their main profile linked to their forum one and uses a moniker? Come on Sherlock, you’ve got this! #detectivetime

Not me, but wonder if you are going to do the sit anyway….

That hasn’t happened to me before. It might be another forum member, but it does seem a bit cheeky not to DM you and ask first.

Also, how would you even contact that sitter? Since there is no way for sitters to reach out to each other through the platform.

:man_detective: Looking at their reviews, have they sat for any of the same hosts as you?

#curiouserandcuriouser

I fit the criteria (over 40 reviews ) and I’d have no hesitation in recommending you—but first I would probably send you a DM with a link to the listing to see if it was of interest .

It has never happened to me and the only explanations I can think of are:

  • The HOs are confused about how THS works, perhaps the previous sitter told them they were happy to be contacted by prospective sitters and recommend them and they took the liberty of “personalizing” that recommendation.
  • If you have had your profile linked to your forum profile at some point, it could be someone from the forum. Or they might also have identified you by the information you have provided here, they may have been at one of your sits or just have come across one of your reviews. I have come across a couple of forum members when I was searching for listings, I even happened to sit for a disastrous HO, whose story I had read on the forum. Such a pity that I only identified the HO too late!

I completely agree with @silversitters that this recommendation is quite inappropriate. I would never recommend anyone without previously checking with them.

Here’s my suggestion: the other sitter is also a HO and you’ve sat for them…the membership might be in their partners name?

A mystery! I think other members know that I love working on those. But it wasn’t me either. :detective::detective::detective:

Not wanting to divert away from the core mystery here, but I’m intrigued by the Lewes in Sussex UK sitter (14 reviews) who has been confirmed as the next sitter for my most recent Jersey sit…. I’m not sure if I’m feeling more ‘protective’ of the dogs or the HOs :hibiscus: as I helped/coached the HOs through the whole convoluted THS process and sat for them twice. I’ll sit again but couldn’t do this next date so instead I offered tips on how to select a sitter that wasn’t me :joy:.

You’re good at this!!!

Now that I think of it, @Maggie8K would have identified the profile, even if it’s in the partner’s name. But maybe they are no longer together and this is a different account.

It must be nice to be such a great sitter that people recommend you that don’t even know you!

I’m jealous.

This is turning into a Romance Novel….

@Henry_R I will make no comment …

The sit is too far off for me time wise, but I told the hosts to feel free to check back with me in a month or two, if they’ve not found a sitter.

It looks like a great sit, so I would think they’d easily get applicants, though — one healthy cat, who sounds nice and can be left alone for up to six hours. The location is attractive and the home has a nice view and has easy walking to amenities. It’s the kind of sit I would do normally.

Yes, maybe another forum member? But I haven’t had my profile linked to my forum account for a long time. I removed it, because I got random contact, like another sitter who was looking for a job for their grown son.

I wouldn’t be able to contact the recommending sitter, because I don’t know them and don’t have their contact info. I also wouldn’t do that anyway.

I scrolled through the recommending sitter’s past sits and we have no one in common. They have top-notch reviews, though, and would seem to easily get requests for repeat sits.

Thank you. Likewise.

Separately, I did recommend another forum member for a friend’s sit, but that sitter had expressed interest and we DM’d before I connected them with my friend. Happily, their sit went well enough to repeat in the future.

The wording of their invitation doesn’t sound like that. It’s straightforward, like X sat for us and recommended you.

You did your coaching too well

No. I don’t recognize the sitter at all from their profile. And they don’t have any hosting info on their profile.
