Sitter List

Hi there! Newby sitter here! Before my first sit, I’d like a list of things to pack/take with. From what I gather so far, it looks like folks order things for delivery when they get there. I’m going to mountain towns where there may be little in regards to DoorDash, etc.
Thanks!
Molly

First check out what the HO says will be available for your use.
Hairdryer for instance if you use one, no point taking what you don’t need.

Hi there,
I am a newbie house sitter. May I have your top 5 suggested things to bring with me on my sits?

Thanks!

Hey thanks! Could you pls resend the pic of the adaptor/outlet/plug thingy? haha

We always bring:

  1. rubber gloves
  2. microfiber cloths
  3. chargers for phones, iPad, laptop
  4. coffee/sugar/milk and our pour-over drip cones
  5. groceries - discuss with Owners what you can use in their kitchens—oil, spices, vinegar, flour, etc.

Mine are dated, yet still work well — they’re maybe 10 to 15 years old, so I doubt they sell the same ones now. I have two of these and they come with three standard outlets, plus a USB one.

You can find countless late model ones on Amazon and many other sites.

I keep a word document with things to bring on a house sit. I bring some cleaning products of my own. Have done some house sits where they don’t have paper towel or windex - a must for me! Some of the recent house sits we’ve done don’t have toasters or coffee makers - a must for us. If it’s a weekend local sit, I usually bring our own sheets and ask for the homeowners to leave the bed stripped. Find that so much easier than washing their bedding.

Depends on which country we are headed to as to what it would be @mollsyA but when we’re flying with cabin bags only (always) then, a french press, hot water bottle, the game of Dobble (look it up :rofl:), skipping rope & some tiger balm. #aneclecticmix

Thank you so much!

Recommendations for things to take with you will depend on how you’ll be getting to sits. We travel in our own vehicle (we currently sit solely in the UK and in Europe) so carry a lot of stuff with us. Here are a few of the things we take and always use:

Our trailing socket with 4m lead:
https://amzn.eu/d/0iSCVTY
(because you never know where sockets will be located, or how many there will be);

Drawer boxes:

We use these for the bedside cabinets, to ensure we never mark furniture with our bits and pieces, or with a cup or glass. Especially useful with them having sides;

A Bialetti induction coffee pot:
https://amzn.eu/d/eZotkYZ
(for when there’s no coffee machine);

A Tefal portable induction hob:
https://amzn.eu/d/goJmlc2
(not everyone has a good or easy-to-clean hob, so this is our failsafe);

A small, 1 litre kettle:

(some kettles we find are full of limescale and a bit grotty, so we take our own and keep it clean);

Victorinox knives:
https://amzn.eu/d/2l8gDNN
(a brilliant little set and saves having to use blunt knives);

Crocs (easy to slip on and off when taking dogs out for a pee, easy to wash when they get mucky and can be wiped dry);

We also take antibac wipes (to wipe TV remotes) , dishwashing sponges and cloths, (to wipe down potentially dirty worktops etc) dishwasher tablets (they’re often a bit scarce!), laundry products and a few toilet rolls.

We take a small, collapsible bowl on dog sits, so we can give the pooches a drink of water when we’re out walking.

I could go on, but this probably isn’t very helpful for sitters who are limited in what they can carry.

I usually drive to a sit, so I have learned to bring my own pillow. I have a tricky neck and most pillows don’t work for me.

I also bring teabags as that’s what I use. Most people only have coffee.

Chargers for your particular devices are a must!

Earplugs.
A towel – I’ve seen HO’s towels, even clean, with lots of dog hair on them, ew. And if the pillow doesn’t smell quite like home, you can put your own towel over it. (Agree about bringing your own pillow if you can; I’m fussy about them too.)
GPS – I love paper maps but it’s sure handy in unfamiliar places.
Granola bars or trail mix for emergency snacks.
Allergy pills :laughing:
Camera!

Good luck on your first sit!
