I’m fairly new to THS and have had only 3 sits so far (2 completed, 1 future) and another sit cancelled. I have several search locations saved to receive notices of upcoming sits but wondering if it’s acceptable to inquire to THS members as to interesting places to visit in the southeast U.S. other than the more obvious locals. I don’t want to travel too far away due to family obligations but I’m betting THS members have discovered great sits in places I’d have no idea about otherwise.
Welcome to the forum!
I would like to go there sometime, I hardly know the area. The only suggestion that I can give is the upcoming eclipse on April 8 where totality passes over Arkansas.
Maybe it would be good to add “Southeast US” to the title of the thread.
Two places I love located definitely south and east-ish are Naples and Fort Myers. Laid-back communities with amazing beaches from where you can watch dolphins freely swim
I would suggest just about anywhere in Western North Carolina. There are lots of sits in Asheville which is a great city for art, culture, and food. Not too far from Asheville is Hendersonville. Hendersonville is sort of a smaller Asheville. Both Asheville and Hendersonville are close to the mountains, hiking and orger outdoors activities.
One of my favorite snall towbs close to Asheville is Black Mountain. Black Mountsin has a cute, funky downtown and one of my favorite bars, The Town Pump.
Further north, Boone and Blowning Rock are great little towns and close to the mountains.
Brevard is great. Right next to Pisgah National Forest and The Blue Ridge Parkway.
I lived in Greenville, SC for 15 years. It has become a big tourist desination. They have a great art museum, a couple of good live preformance theaters, a great downtown, and food. One of best Persian restaurants in the Southeast is in Greenville, Pomegranate.
If you are looking for a big city, Atlanta. I lived there for 4 years and have spent almost every year i left Atlanta house sitting there. The charm to Atlanta is its neighborhoods. Cabbagetown is the best!
Yes, Fort Myers is great. I’d recommend anything on the west coast of Florida, the east ciast not so much.
Thanks for the suggestions. I just joined the community forum. So if I can figure out how to edit the title of my post, I will lol
It is probably too late to edit now (I think that was 30 minutes). But @Jenny or @Carla could fix that for you.
Not very far sourth geographically, but some parts of Virginia – the Blue Ridge Mountains – are stunning. Towns like: Charlottesville, Staunton, Richmond, or even West Virginia – Harper’s Ferry area/Charleston.
Thanks! I’ll try checking with them. It’s obviously going to take me a bit to get the hang of this. Like my first response to you, I think I sent it wrong hitting the green Reply button. I can’t figure out how to respond to a specific post. I read somewhere to use the grayed out reply arrow but when I hit it I’m not getting an option to respond back to you
Thanks so much for suggesting the Asheville area. I hate to admit, but it’s somewhere I haven’t thought about going but now realize the drive from where I live is closer than I would have thought. I’ll add it to my Saved Locations. It’s an exciting prospect because reading your post it makes me think of being in the mountains but nowhere near the crowd congestion of the Smokies. As far as Atlanta area goes, I know it has a lot to offer but from my minimal experience of visiting there in the past, I’m not sure it’d be a place I’d want to travel solo.
Thank you @pietkuip - the title is all updated for you @Cindy75Le
If anyone is after a Charlottesville area sit, PM me!
Sorry, where are you located?
I would suggest Charleston, Savannah, Beaufort, St. Petersburg, Destin, anywhere in Florida really. Boca Raton is a nice area. Fairhope Alabama
I think you could spend your whole life exploring North Carolina and find tons of interest geographically, historically, and culturally. Boone is a fabulous college town, and anything around Asheville has a lot to recommend it as well. Loads of sits, too, as it’s a popular retirement and second home location.
I love the Wilmington area of North Carolina. Great food, super cool maritime history, lots of fun dive bars. Charleston is perennially popular for a reason, but the tourism machine can get tiresome, especially with all the bachelorette parties. The islands around Charleston are also really cool, albeit with a much more relaxed vibe.
I’ll put in a plug for my home state of Kentucky as well, which has world class rock climbing and hiking, among other things.
Im sitting now with Casey in Flat Rock, south of Hendersonville, NC - lots of interesting things to see. And some great places for coffee.
Ashville North Carolina, historical and beautiful spot in the Smokey mountains. I’d recommend spring or fall. Cumberland Island off the coast of Georgia, and Great Smokey Mountain National park in Tennessee. Nashville big music scene as well. Just keep in mind summers can be brutal as very hot and humid. I lived in Atlanta in the 80’s and although I’m not a fan of most of the south, there’s a few places worth a visit.
Great post!
Thanks so much for your input. You’re the second person who’s suggested the Asheville and North Carolina areas, a locale I’m not too familiar with, and now anxious to check out.
If you find yourself in the area, please check out the Old Marshall Jail Hotel. It’s an amazingly restored building in a super cute little town. The owners have done an incredible job with the space, and you can have a drink on the patio overlooking the river.
Highly recommend!
Atlanta has a bad rep. Perhaps parts of town can be dicey but almost anything on the east side of downtown is good. If you do look at Atlanta look for sits in Cabbagetown, Inman Park, Candler Park, or Decatur. Those are great neighborhoods. If you go to Cabbagetown, reach out and i can introduce you to some people.
But, yes, check out Asheville and neighboring cities. We used to live in Greenville and would just drive up to Asheville on a Saturday. Love Asheville!
