Hi. I’m currently in Asheville NC where anyone in the US knows is a mess because of Hurricane Helene. Is everyone ok?
I’d love to meet-up and swap stories from this adventure we’re all on here. I’m here until 10/9.
My heart goes out to you. Are you okay? The pets?
I just cancelled a sit in the area for Dec. I feel bad but I think the roads are going to be awful for months. How are you getting out after the sit ends?
Yes, some of the roads are awful. Some no longer exist. Most of the roads are ok. The main problem right now is water. Most of the city will not have running water for weeks or months. That said there is free water on every street corner. You have to go get it. Getting in or out of Asheville is not a problem. I left yesterday to go take a shower an hour away in Greenville. It’s not easy being here right now but to experience the spirit of community in this town is truly amazing. I’ve been here many times before. In an odd way I’m glad I’m here to experience it.
Thank you. The kitties and I are fine. My HO’s who are out of the country have been beyond supportive.
I had friends move to the area 2 DAYS before the storm, so they had no local network at all. They’ve jumped right in to the community helping with recovery and rebuilding efforts and they’re saying that they will probably never feel as connected to any other community again as they do to this one after this experience.
Yikes! It sounds like your friends are a perfect fit for Asheville. None of us had any local news. I have friends a few blocks away and my neighbors have been fantastic. We all shared the news we got from friends in other parts of the country. The way this town has one together is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.
Yeah, they seem quite happy and optimistic about their move, even with the situation so I think they were really lucky. Obviously everyone would have been better without the storm, but if you have to experience something like that, better to do it with a community that’s really pulling together.
I’m happy they are well and thriving until these conditions. Please give them my best wishes.
So glad you are managing. My sit was south in Land of waterfalls, just east of Brevard. The main road to that area is a mess. And mid Dec I have a sit in Albuquerque, so I had planned to take I40 west, now you can’t. That is what made my decision, my inability to really get out and go west after the sit so I could make it to Albuquerque. It was going to be tight with roads in tact, without, it was difficult to manage. And I am senior traveling alone. Didn’t want to do it. Though feel very guilty for canceling.
Hi Huronbase,
I’m glad you made it out ok. I love Brevard and the surrounding area. One of my favorite sits ever was on top of a mountain in Brevard. I’m glad I wasn’t there this time.
As much as it pains me to say it, I too am a Sr. solo traveler. I’m in full blown denial on the senior thing. I call it late mid-life.
As messy as it is here, fun is returning. Many of the breweries are open and there is free food and water on every street.
At least if you cancel your winter sit now they’ll have plenty of time to find a new sitter.
Good luck and safe travels
I wasn’t there. I was suppose to come early Dec. I was just worried about getting in and out, going west, with I40 out. And the mountain roads, since they all wind with the rivers. I am glad you are enjoying the experience.
