I found out a couple of days before that this one year old female Labrador that I am looking after for twelve days has come on heat. It was great to know beforehand. I assumed the owners had great advice how to deal with the situation but no it was a first for them too! They do not intend to breed the dog so will have her spayed when the time comes.
I’m lucky to be deep in the country here and get up early to walk the dog in huge fields so I can get her back on lead quickly if a dog is sighted. She has been well trained and invariably comes back for her treat of a biscuit. I’ve done a week nearly now and she still has a discharge. I am clearing up but the weather is very warm and dry so we have been able to be outside a good deal.
So far so good! It’s now the weekend with continuing good weather.. I’m thinking early walks and using an extendable lead with her.. she has a spacious garden so perhaps after a great week of countryside walks I should play safe and keep her home. Much quieter during the week. Also in big fields it’s easier to see any approaching threat!
I’d welcome any advice people can give me.
We passed an old male Black Lab but he didn’t seem aware at all !
It’s a fine balance between being careful and allowing her to enjoy some exercise. She’s a young energetic pup still. The weather is glorious at the moment too.
I’ve got one more week to get through!
I noticed on this thread many wouldn’t accept the sit in the first place or do one like this again. So far I haven’t found it too restrictive and it’s good to broaden one’s experience as a sitter, I suppose too!
Is this a red flag? Should I have walked away ?
The dog is extra affectionate and so far is always checking to see where I am. Am I walking a tight rope without realizing?
