Storage of vehicle/parking options other than airport

I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on places that you can park your car other than expensive airport parking options (even those that are located off site). I travel/sit almost 100% of the time. Sometimes I drive to my sits and for others that are too far away, I fly to them in which case I need to park my car. I generally do longer sits, especially if I am paying to fly to them but then you are racking up expensive parking costs. Does anyone have any out of the box solutions I might not have thought of? Thanks in advance.

My husband and I are full time sitters and we are lucky to have a friend who we can leave our car with when we travel out of the country. But one day I was researching this topic. If you are from the US I came across a site called neighbor.com where people rent out parking spaces–it might be in someone’s garage or driveway or it might be a business that has a parking lot. From what I have seen, it is probably a cheaper option than keeping the car at a typical storage facility.

Not out of the box but taxi or train to airport

This is out of the box…if you are bold and brave.

TURO…rent your car out! Since you won’t be there to manage it, pay someone else half the profits to arrange pick ups/drop offs.

Turn your liability into an asset!!!

In England use the app JustPark where local people rent their drives out. Then catch a bus/train to the airport.

Yes so interesting how different places/countries do that. Unfortunately I can’t do that as all my worldly possessions are in my car. I don’t have a house so I couldn’t do that but appreciate the idea. Best to you!

Thank you so much! I will definitely check it out. I knew someone would have a good idea.

@TracyRo ,

For the record…I am on a 5 week vacation (not THS) without my car. I am NOT bold and brave enough to do that myself!!!

Hotels near airports rent out parking. Its actually crazy. If youbook a room with some Hotels they actually charge you to park your car there. Ive seen several adson craigslist that offer you to park your car in their driveway. Good luck.

Not sure where are you located but this is an US vehicle storage provider.

Hey TracyRo, we used to have a camper van(with all of worldly possessions). Last year when we flew from Charlotte, NC to Mexico City, i just search for airport parking in Google. A few sites came up where business advertise parking. They were all definitely cheaper than the airport. The earlier you book one, the better price. We ended up parking our van at an Econolodge. They had a shuttle to the airport. When we returned all was goid with the van!

It sounds like you need a secure place to park your car, so this would not work for you, but for the sake of others, at least in the US, there are parking lots associated with certain public transportation systems.

For example, the SMART train in Marin and Sonoma Counties, California, charges $5 per night to park. You can use that train to get to the Sonoma County airport very easily, and you can even get to San Francisco and Oakland airports through a combination of SMART train, ferry, and BART train. I realize this sounds complicated, but we looked into it, and it is pretty simple and affordable travel.

Have you looked into getting public transport to the airport? It’s usually quite expensive to leave your car for a long time, and airports generally are well served by buses and trains.

If I’m going to be gone a month or more I put my car in storage. I’m currently on a 6-month trip in Europe and my car is in the US in a storage facility. It’s essentially a large parking lot that is gated and monitored that is primarily used for people to store RVs, boats, or other vehicles that they can’t store at their home. It just costs me $85 a month and my car insurance goes down dramatically for those months since it’s in storage and not being driven.

thanks. yes that is more of what i am looking for. any good way to find those places? do you just google RV parking?

thanks. yes I have used those but even at $5 a day (which is difficult to find) that adds up to too much money when you are doing a 2 month sit.

thanks Bunny Cat, I will check it out. Happy sitting!
