I asked my Swedish teacher about this and he said that “främmande” means visitors in this context. “Strangers” would be translated as “främlingar”.
Either way, if the pet owners are not speaking in their native language, it might be more important to ask questions. Things might sound strange, but there might be a genuine language issue!?
If the vibe was off though, I’d say no.
@Catlover96 I think you’re doing the right thing backing off. We had a sit once where the hosts were the nervous types. They only wanted a housesitter for home security as they were in the middle of renovations and the house was not fully secured. They had a dog but sent him to family members. It is the only pet free sit we’ve ever done.
The red flags were there from the start. The first message to us was that she wanted to have a video call but that the husband was very suspicious and wary of having sitters so she wasn’t even sure they’d go thriugh with it! During the call they were both friendly but the wife kept mentioning how strange and uncomfortable it felt- the idea of strangers in the house. They did not seem concerned about the fact we were flying in from the other side of the world 2 days before the sit and that there could be delays or anything else. They obviously trusted us to arrive on time but did not really like the idea of us actually being in the house!! It felt rather strange to us to not feel trusted but this was a particularly attractive sit for us at that time so we agreed to confirm it. 12 days in a luxury home with no pets & time to get over the jet lag in peace with no responsibilities! Perfect! When we arrived the wife again said how nervous she was about having ‘strangers’ in the house. We did out best to reassure her that a large number of previous hosts had trusted us and they could too. By then we had the call and several messages so were not real strangers anymore. We asked about cameras and the husband said there weren’t any but we did not really believe him.
Anyway they left, contact was OK- very minimal from their side and we did not meet them on their return.
We sent a review request but heard nothing. A few days later we sent a WhatsApp and they replied thanking us for the flowers & card we left but they did not give us a review despite a couple of friendly reminders. They just ignored us completely. It was strange- complete radio silence.
We suspected they did indeed have internal cameras and had monitored us during the sit. We did not ofcourse do anything untoward or suspicious. They perhaps might have seen my hubby walking around half naked sometimes
but nothing wierd or bad!
Anyway the point is we would no longer agree to take a sit with overly suspicious or fearful hosts. If they are not ready to trust sitters they need to find another solution that works for them.
