I’ll weigh in here. I’m American, and drink tea regularly; can’t stand coffee. I had never in my life used an electric kettle and had always boiled my water on the stove in a whistle type stove-top kettle. Then, we did a home exchange in Wimbledon for the 2012 Olympics. The house had an electric kettle, something I had no inkling even existed! I became an instant convert and now own one for our home and another for our vacation home. When I sit, I am very disappointed when I don’t find an electric kettle, and even not a stove top kettle. I grin and bear it and heat my water in the microwave. A sacrilege, for sure. Luckily, I never do long sits and I manage to get by and can’t wait to get home to my electric kettle.
Well, that is a bit weird that they would click on the “kettle” as an amenity and then not have a kettle. What are people thinking?
@sledgejoyce your comment made me chuckle! You sound like a die-hard tea drinking Brit rather than American.
I am a 1960s Brit and was born with an electric kettle (and a toaster!) already well established in the household!
There’s nothing quite like ‘putting on the kettle for a cuppa’!
P.s if there is no electric (or stovetop) kettle I always use a small saucepan. I don’t like microwaves.
I have carried one of these around the world with me for years, weighs nothing, costs next to nothing and boils quickly. You just hang it inside your cup or whatever you are boiling and voila! ![]()
We’ve found that many households in the UK don’t have a toaster! It’s just not the same, making toast under a grill or in an air fryer (have never tried the frying pan method!)!
@Happypets Sometimes we find a toaster, even a kettle sometimes!, tucked away in a cupboard as there are too many appliances hanging around on the counter top! I’m old school -simple is good!- in such cases I’d pack the fancy coffee machine away (that’s if its not one of those industrial size ones!
) & also the milk frother, and the airfryer if I need the space. I never use any of them. Just give me a simple kettle, toaster and my good old stove top expresso pot and I’m good to go!
@ziggy Great idea! I’d forgotten all about those. As a young back packer (decades ago!) I used to travel with one too!
@Lokstar yes it’s fantastic - I’m now an “old backpacker” but still find this so easy and light. I just look at those big coffee machines and shudder, need a degree to figure out how to use them! ![]()
@Happypets totally agree, toasting under a grill just isn’t the same as using a regular toaster.
