I’m not only stunned that you would do this to future homeowners but what about their pets? Does you pet usually poo and pee in the house? If not, the condition of your home means your pet suffered through this sitter!! Dirty animal cages? Your poor animals.
. The poor animals of other homeowners. ![]()

It is really unfortunate that you have not had any good experiences with sitters. Certainly not all sitters are the same. Do you live in an area where it is a challenge to get sitters? You may need to take a look at how you choose sitters. It is tough on both sides to know if it will be a good fit. But your home and your pets shouldn’t have to suffer because you are now choosing to lower your expectations.
@Kelitino While my expectations are lower I’m still learning to navigate the THS system and will be much more cautious and diligent when selecting future sitters to reduce the possibility that our pets won’t be properly cared for in our absence.
We live in a rural area in Greece and from our experience the culture and the locals who reflect that culture tend to treat dogs and cats as “things” and not creatures with needs and feelings which makes it even more difficult to find suitable care.
The two smaller dogs do not have indoor accidents if they’re given opportunity to relieve themselves outdoors twice per day as explained in the Wekcine Guide and during the walk through.
I would like to completely get rid of the stars and both sides write honest factual reviews.
I would like to rid the world of poverty, crime, hate, pollution, and global warming.
I can’t image why you would leave a 5-star review for someone that irresponsible. Why would you open the door to her doing the same thing to other HO’s?
Which raises a question–can images be attached to reviews? If so, a few picture showing the damage would show your poor review was accurate; if not, maybe that’s something THS should consider.
The “blind review” system was put in place because so many hosts didn’t leave an honest negative review for a bad sitter for fear of a retaliatory bad review, which would thus discourage future sitters who might have applied for that host’s advertised sit.
Despite the double blind system, that problem still exists today in other forms, such as the one that prompted your question. Some sitters may not be put off by a potential host’s prior negative review of a sitter, but many are, especially if it’s one bad review among a bunch of positives that were left by other hosts reluctant to leave a deserved negative review. A negative review would be disputed by a sitter who would respond in such a way as to try to put the blame entirely on the host.
In my scenario, I can just imagine how this sitter would have responded in defense of a 2 star review had I chosen to leave one. “The property is way too much work, too many animals, too many plants to water, a pool that requires high maintenance, it’s impossible to maintain animal cages to the level of cleanliness that they expect, there was no smell of dog urine and any feces they found would have been after I left, and I don’t know anything about the ripped screen door I think they’re lying!”
Again, the concern about backlash from a negative review adversely affecting the review leaver existed long before I posted a 5 star review for a 2 star sitter, long before I joined this platform. I’m simply adapting to the status quo. The hosts that loudly complain about me not watching out for them are from a member base who created this problem long before I joined this platform.
Boy, that’s a lot to ask…clean the pool, clean cages, water plants, etc. Sounds like a full time cleaning position.
I just completed the installation of an automatic 5 zone irrigation system that covers all the foliage on the property except for some plants on the patio that would be problematic to run irrigation lines to. Watering those takes 5-10 minutes every couple of days or less if it rains.
Washing down the animal cages is a 5-10 minute task perhaps twice per week.
The pool is cleaned with an automatic vacuum. Plug in the base, plug the cleaner into the base and toss it in the pool. Sweep debris from the shallow end into the deeper end so the robot vacuum can get to it. Rinse the vacuum filters after the 2 hour cycle. That’s about 10-15 minutes work once per week.
The two smaller dogs don’t need walks, just access to outside. The bigger dog requires 1-2 walks, 45 minutes per day. They can be left alone almost all day long to free the sitter up to enjoy the local area.
I calculate the sitters daily time spent on pet and home responsibilities including walking the big dog to be maybe an hour per day, in exchange for the use of a beautiful property in a prime location, with a car available if needed, to be quite reasonable.
In fact given that many sitters say they do this sort of thing because they enjoy working with animals, most of that time spent isn’t even “work”.
Your mileage clearly varies and I’m sure you’re not the only one, which is why I spell this all out in the listing and the Welcome Guide.
I’m both home owner and sitter and to be honest, they’re not great for Home owners either. I was abused by a pet sitter applicant for not having time to write a detailed decline and despite numerous attempts they’ve done nothing and this woman is in people’s homes with their pets. They seem to just want the money so I may not renew. I think it spills be an equally respectful exchange because if someone’s looking after my pet I feel blessed but equally I’ve got a cosy home so it goes both ways.
I’d be very curious as to why the 5 star review. As both a pet sitter and home owner I wouldn’t want her to move on to my home. That’s concerning
But the result will be them moving on to mess up someone else’s home. ![]()

Hi @Niamh. I strongly encourage you to not take the bait. Ah, I see too late now
Thanks Maggie. Little does she know I’m in the holiday home care business for over 14 years and a professional sitter in my daily life at least 4. but hey, if laughing at nothing makes someone happy, so be it.. Life is too short. Thanks for the heads up. ![]()
Yes, you got it. My laughing emoji was not directed at @Niamh . I was laughing at my own joke!
This subpar sitter had a stellar multiple 5 star review record which I suspect was the result of numerous hosts not wanting to be the first to damage the record of a nice young sitter who meant well (which she did). I felt deceived by the prior hosts, and did not want to be the first to break the 5 star pattern which would make me- a new member with only 1 prior review at the time- out to be the unreasonable one when reviews were compared by potential future applicant sitters.
Yes, it’s putting my needs ahead of the other hosts- those same ones who did the same by not accurately reviewing this sitter. The same membership base as a whole that was so reluctant to leave a deserve negative review for fear of retaliatory feedback that THS changed reviews to “double blind” in an attempt to reduce the problem.
