Travel to the US

Wondering if there are many Canadians (and others) who are put off travelling to the US these days. I am Canadian and feel I may never visit the US again.
My sincerest greetings to you all.

Thank goodness we did our two year road trip a couple of years ago. We travel on UK passports but will still hesitate to go back although we are booked on a cruise in Alaska in June/July. In and out, 15 days.

I think you are at risk of opening a can of worms, but, in a word - ‘yes’

I have already seen some statistics that suggest number of planned/booked visits to the US (from various countries) are much decreased compared to previous years.

Not surprising, really.

Hi Rhonda. Two threads on this topic were started a few weeks ago. The conversations got heated rather quickly and were closed by the moderators.
So don’t be surprised if this thread has a similar fate.

Oh, ok, I’m sorry I missed the party. Thanks

We’re British (live in the UK), and we won’t be visiting the US. I could list 100’s of reasons, the Canada thing is just one of many.

I’m German and we will most certainly travel to the US. I could not imagine a single reason why not.

Hello everyone!

I just wanted to pop on as it’s been mentioned that previous similar discussions have been closed.

Our Community Guidelines state:

“Please refrain from negative comments about age, race, religion, culture, or personal identity. We’re not big fans of discussing religion and politics, as they can sometimes lead to disharmony. The Forum team may close topics or remove posts that stir up unnecessary tension.”

I understand that US politics are something that everyone’s talking about at the moment, and previous topics were closed in line with the guideline I’ve quoted above.

If we can keep the discussion respectful, and more focused on people’s experiences and concerns, rather than specific political affiliations etc then we can hopefully let this conversation have some space here, as I recognise that there are issues that impact members.

Anything more specific e.g. around political affiliation, might be better discussed via DM.

Thanks for your understanding.

I’ll add my two pennies worth before this thread is shutdown. I won’t be returning to the US, it’s extremely expensive, the tipping culture is ridiculous and out of control and thirdly I’m a veteran who served alongside US forces and I’m deeply offended by the recent statement by JD Vance. Frankly, I won’t go somewhere I don’t feel welcome.

You can’t imagine, really? Perhaps you are being sarcastic.

I would be quite hesitant, as I don’t want to take the risk of showing up at a border to do a housesit, only to be refused entry. Imagine the inconvenience to all involved. I know this can happen anywhere, but we’re on EU passports, so can easily navigate most of Europe.

Search online for the recent case of Rebecca Burke, She’s a Brit and was trying to enter Canada from the US, she was refused entry because she was truthful about the reason for entering Canada i.e. a Workaway assignment. Back in the US she was arrested for breaking the terms of her tourist visa by working, albeit through Workaway and without financial remuneration. Payment in kind e.g. accommodation or food is till classified as working uS authorities. She has been held in an ICE facility near Tacoma and has been there for 2 weeks. She has a return flight ticket so it seems the US are determined to make an example of her, instead of deporting her. I’m not commenting on the reasons for being apprehended, she took a risk and it turned out bad for her. Her treatment seems unduly harsh however,

I don’t go to the USA anyway as I find it unacceptable (to me) to be fingerprinted like a criminal on entry. There are even more reasons I’d avoid it currently. Shame, as there are some parts I’d love to visit.

Let me run and get some popcorn before this thread is shut down

I didn’t know that the US fingerprints on entry (US citizen), but I’ve been to many countries that do this.

OTOH, I fully understand and support anyone avoiding travel in the US at the moment, especially for housesitting or other hospitality exchange reasons. It’s too risky.

I know, I’ve read about her; it’s very scary. I wish Canada had not refused her entry.

No, actually not.

Edit: Oh wait, probably because it’s very expensive.

Every EU citizen had to give their fingerprints to obtain a national ID card.

There are plenty of great countries to visit, no need to come to the US (maybe in the future).

As an American who didn’t vote for him I can understand how Canadians feel. I lived in Canada for three months a little over a year ago. Lovely people. Please come back when his four years is up and the next president will undo his wrongs I’m sure. So many Americans are so against what he is doing.
