How fun! It’s so good to know there are others on the same journey. We were full-time sitters, but on a specific tour plan, so sometimes there were just no sits for our route/dates.
Here are our numbers:
14 housesits
7 countries (Netherlands, UK (Eng+Scot), Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal, S. Africa)
163 nights of housesitting
17 dogs
11 cats
31 chickens/ducks/other birds
2 sheep
2 gold fish
This is really wonderful and fun.
What I see here is a myriad of ways we have chosen to enjoy home and pet sitting and to travel, experiencing the world, big or small, “locally” or exotically. They are all adventurous, filled with personal meaning.
There is no competition and no one should feel less or better than. I actually only officially logged 7 sits. I have slowed down to relish longer sits and repeats with people and animals I have come to love. Numbers and passport stamps are cool but anyone who has done even one sit or intends to, is to be applauded. That includes HO.
It takes a lot of courage to open that door.
Have fun everyone and don’t forget to smile.
I had not thought to do a tally but this thread inspired me to do it. This was my first year of full-time nomadic cat sitting and I really enjoyed it. I met many wonderful cats and I got to see parts of England, Wales and France that I never would have visited otherwise. Three were repeat sits and I would have accepted more invitations to do repeat sits but I was not always available when the hosts contacted me about returning for a second sit.
1 Jan to 31 Dec 2022
30 sits
3 countries: England, Wales, France
334 nights of catsitting
61 cats
I fed many birds and squirrels on behalf of hosts but it was not possible to count them all
Note: I also did an additional 12 nights catsitting as part of my first ever cat sit 20-31 Dec 2021
We are full-time sitters and in 2022 we lived in Portugal for a total of 3 months. We lived in France for 2.5 months, in Spain for 2 months, in England for 5 weeks and in Switzerland for nearly a month.
Throw in a few weeks of Germany, Belgium and Northern Ireland and it’s fair to say, it was an unforgettable year!
We looked after 24 dogs, 15 cats (+ 6 stray cats), 6 chickens, 3 rabbits, 2 tortoises and a handful of fishes! And we had to go to the vet twice.
2022 was our 9th year with THS. We still own a home as well as a summer cottage but we managed to travel to some great places in the United States and were lucky enough to make some wonder furry, and human, friends!
That’s fantastic @Alice considering you’ve been travelling from and to home.
Consider renting your home, if that would work for you, so you have that extra income. It’s what I’ve done, although I only have one home. It’s freed me up to housesit permanently, while I’m still fit and able, and I have it to go back to when I’m not or want a break.
WOW WOW WOW! Some of these stats are astonishing! I had 105 paid nights with my pet sitting business in 2022. As someone who loves my own bed, that number felt like A LOT! In 2023, I’m going to do less paid pet sitting and, fingers crossed, start traveling/sitting for TH members regularly.
Fun to look back. A different kind of year for us since we also included a three-month road trip in our van and spent time in our son’s home in the Netherlands while they were away (sitting? or perhaps squatting? not included in numbers below).
9 sits
5 countries
163 nights
9 dogs
3 cats
3 horses
1 (or more–not sure since they only came in to eat one at a time!) hedgehogs
So true. We find we have become clearer on what works for us and what doesn’t in travel styles, and that will likely continue to evolve. It means longer sits for sure, when available, and definitely fewer countries with longer periods in each. It is definitely NOT about more + faster = better for us! Sloooowwww travel is a goal for many reasons. And when people say that we are living THE dream, we respond that we are living OUR dream. Sitting, traveling style, home base or free as a bird–all personal choices.
I agree with you. Having done 30 sits during 2022 as my first year of full-time nomadic catsitting, I will slow down a lot in 2023. I have already confirmed three longer sits for 2023 - 100 days, 55 days and 50 days as well as one for 14 days. The 55 and 50 day sits are for repeats of cat sits that I did in 2022.
Great reading the replies, we have done 2 countries with 16 pet sits, 10 dogs, 20 cats and 1 party hamster (aka as it only came out after 10 pm). We have met some amazing home owners in 2022 and some incredible pets, oh and quite a few tears at leaving the pets when the sit finished, some of them we really bonded with.
