Starting to think this thread has run its course.
A member once posted how the forum can be a negative post fest and posts from new members are tedious at times, etc,…I wonder if that member can see the negativity and tedium in this thread.
Human nature…so fascinating…
As a newish member, I don’t see the forum as a Negative-fest, quite the opposite; very informative and interesting. I love the mix of topics, although I appreciate that for all timers it may be somewhat repetitive, but that is the cycle of life. I feel there is plenty of value here. People are very revealing and it guides us to thinking what we do and don’t want as a sitter or home owner. This thread has been very interesting. I love that people from all over contribute and gives different types of thinking.
@florida For you next sitting need, it would be great if you just state in your posting that the sitters will have use of the facilities, but are not allowed to bring guests per the HOA rules. Also state in your video calls that any visitors to your home must be pre-approved. It would also be nice for you to offer to have the sitters arrive a day before you leave and you can take them to use the facilities and possibly introduce them to some of your friends who play pickle ball and that way they may have folks to play with. Best of luck in finding suitable sitters.
Has been for quite a while, but handy for tips when/if I housesit there
Was thinking the exact same thing.!!
I would suggest putting this in your listing to avoid misunderstandings.
@lou- Comments below your points
One:: pickleball requires four players.
No, you can play with 2. Have you played pickleball? It doesn’t sound like you are familiar with the sport.
. If you post selling this amenity and giving them a fob, how are they supposed to utilize it without other players?
Anyone can go play pickleball. You show up- solo- you out your racquet down and they invite you to play in rotation- however, I’m not here to explain pickleball rules. You might want to read more on pickleball.
Two: You say you don’t know if they are making up their rules, but you have so much detail on what they did “wrong.” So, do you have neighbors spying on them? Cameras? How do you know they are out or having friends play pickleball all day?
They asked! And we said it wouldn’t be following the rules and we would prefer they not invite friends- liability also- she didn’t care and say “who would know”. We have monitors there- this was already mentioned in my post.
Three: You comment, “We discuss everything with them, and they work their schedules around our needs…” and “This is the job- so do you want it or not…” really appear to conflict with the exchange model.
What exchange model- it’s our model.
In addition, in the U.S., one basis for determining if someone is an employee is if they are made to report to “work” at specific times; a contractor has complete control of their schedules. And you can’t have employees work for free; you at least have to pay city/state minimum wage. My understanding is that THS is Euro-based, but U.S. laws differ. Such comments from HO’s in the U.S. might be areas of concern.
**No idea what you’re talking about and how this is relevant to the initial query- “abusing HOA rules” **
Four: If you list your home on Airbnb and board your animals, you would make much less than an overnight sitter would make by charging.
I don’t think so.
Overnight sitters charge quite a bit. The only reason we haven’t done this so far is that we’d like someone to be with our pets throughout the day- or be more flexible.
I am done with this thread- thank you.

Agree- how do we stop this. I asked one question about abusing the HOA rules, which anyone outside the US, who don’t know what this is or means- makes a joke out of it. Ridiculous. I’m sure they have similar in other countries with another name.
I would hope the moderator would not allow these types of posts.

@Southernsitter
It’s always amazed me how one assumes that an individual has not done what you are suggesting- appreciate the feedback however.
All of our cat sitters come a day early and some stay a few days afterwards. We are flexible. We are more interested in going over cat duties/behaviour, but we have introduced them to our friends who play pickleball and we’ve showed them where to go and how to get involved. We even reserve courts for them. This is not the issue. It was a one-time issue with an individual, who invited 2 of her friends to play. This isn’t allowed.
Thanks- no need for a reply.
We can rent for a longer period of time, but it was just an example - reply to someone else’s comments. Not sure it had anything to do with catsittting ![]()
I was talking about our home, which would be around $200/night where we live.
Thank you.
Hi everyone,
This discussion isn’t constructive and has become quite negative so I’m closing it to new replies.
