Acronyms spelled out

Americans would know that but I doubt many English members would

I agree, which is why it can be a nuisance looking them up as there may be several versions

Yes, I could tell what you were trying to get across.

Hi @MaggieUU

As I am also not a fan of acronyms and didn’t know what PNW is, I am just wondering what your point is?

That @Smiley has been very consistent about her dislike of acronyms for a long time. The PNW example is just the first one I noticed a few years ago when she requested that posters not use it because not everyone would know what it meant

I think it is perfectly reasonable for members to question abbreviations of locations they do not recognise where members of the forum are from different countries. Such was the case of PNW where a number of us didn’t know where it was. I don’t look on that or QLD (as an Australian example) as acronyms because they may start with the first letter or more letters of a word or words but are not pronounced as a single word.

There are many more members than just English (and of course Americans) on here, so it might be more correct to say many people/members outside of USA would not know it. I admit I didn’t know it, but as I am not applying for sits in USA it doesn’t bother me.

Might I add, “HO” is always in caps in here..not as in Santa’s favourite h*

I’m thinking we should switch from HO to PO on this forum. PO - pet owner. Seems to be more applicable. Maybe PO and PS - pet sitter.

Or as voted by forum members “Hosts”

Oh! I had no idea it was voted on. Disregard my post.

Yeah but PO can mean something else (and not Post Office either), and people might get PO’d if you confuse them with it

Yes - rather unusually we were asked for our opinion in January. Members took the time to respond and we have heard nothing since.
The topic was also raised and discussed at length a couple of years prior to that.

I disagree @Cat-ophile I am a home owner with no pets but have to suffer being called a pet parent on THS. I much prefer being called a host.

and in medical parlance it stands for Prescribed Orally

Two acronyms I use a lot are:

JK-just kidding, and I say that out loud!

TIA-thanks in advance. You’ll see that when someone asks for something.

I have two twenty-something kids so I’m always learning!

And don’t get me started on text etiquette! Who knew that adding a period at the end of a sentence is considered aggressive :woman_shrugging:

(Just start a new line)

Dread to think what PR stands for (other than Public Relations)

we can only “suppose”!

A period? oops I thought you were being medical there again…full stop :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I hope that the messages on the forum are easy to read for every nationality, because otherwise the translation becomes quite difficult with all those abbreviation. So for me too, please the words in full. thank you
