Applying for Australian sits

So our main aim when joining TSH was to specifically (eventually) get sits in Perth Australia. We’ve got x7 local sits here in England to build a string of 5* reviews :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:. My first application for a sit in WA was declined within minutes :grimacing:- I had asked for photos of the inside of the house as there were none on the listing and I was thinking (well hoping) that they’d simply forgot to add them as they’re previous reviews were 5*. They’d also been sitters 27 times! Anyway I drew a line under that one… and moved on. I’ve now applied for a sit in Perth with x3 dogs but where one dog belongs to another family member so my question is- is this allowed?

It depends. Is the dog listed as part of the main sitting agreement? If yes then it’s up to you on if you like the sound of it as they’re listing the responsibilities up front so no hidden surprises. Sounds cheeky though @BonnyinBrighton and as you know, could spell a whole world of issues if they don’t all get on or aren’t normally together. #cheapskatesspringstomind

Just discovered it’s a family wedding… so the x3 dogs know each other hence the need to take care of all 3 whilst family members are away for the long weekend. One of the dogs belongs to the Bride!
It’d be a good first ‘international’ sit for us…. just 3 nights.

We’ve done it before, but they had tweaked their listing to include the extra dog.

It’s not something we would necessarily do again though, because the visiting dog was full of none-stop fun and excitement at spending time with his best buddy, whereas the dog that lived in the home loved to sleep, sleep, and sleep some more, and so she ended up exhausted, so we even tried to keep them a little separate from one another so she could get some down-time .

They obviously loved each other to bits, and they were both gorgeous dogs to spend time with, so having one hyper dog and one sleepy dog for a fortnight was fine with us, but very tiring for the one that loved her sleep, whose home it belonged to.

Done that a few times - once in the UK - also for a family reunion resident dog and a family dog Pups were pals and having the family pup around probably made the sit easier because the pups played well together.
Other time was in Austin, TX. 2 xdoodles and 2 cats in residence and the GF’s xdoodle visitor. The visitor kept the cats upstairs and was a bit of a bully but it all worked out. Visitor slept in his crate with the gate closed while the others had run of the house at night.
So long as you aren’t tasked with making the intro, it seems okay if you are in agreement.

One is an elderly small dog and two are young and bouncy so they have a partner in crime hopefully…… the HO has just confirmed without a video chat…. I’m not confirming until I get the chat.
What extra stuff should I ask please?

@BonnyinBrighton Australia is very easy to find petsits except in all honesty most homeowners use cheaper sit sites such as Aussie house sitters which is free to join for them.
Do you already have x7 5* reviews?
To be honest the idea of having to do local sits to build up before applying abroad has never really been necessary. We have only ever sat internationally and our sits are in some of the most competitive countries on this app.

No reviews as yet as our first sit starts mid June…. but x7 sits lined up based on our profile/references/meet ups in person/video chats….
And Perth has very few sits on offer via TSH only via fb which I’m not keen to use….

I agree that Aussie Housesitters and MindaHome are much easier with many more listings in Oz, but we have spoken about this before @BonnyinBrighton. I have 35 reviews from both these sites and probably only three or four I have done video chats. We are a lot more layback and do tend to take people on face value and usually just a normal phone chat closes the deal. Again, you will find many more available sits a bit closer to, but I know that isn’t what your post is about, just mentioning it again because, well because :person_shrugging::joy:

I’m a planner so not great with leaving stuff to the last minute also we need to lock in the flights home in mid to late January….or possibly spend a few weeks in Thailand. So securing one or two Perth sits now would be ideal for the bigger plan….

Three nights and a family wedding seems like a fair gig :raised_hands:t3:

Just go with the flow, but ask what’s the longest time the dogs have spent overnight together, and if they haven’t been used to spending longer periods together, then maybe ask in the event of the younger ones getting a little too much for the older dog, whether there is a separate room where the older one can go to get some down-time if need be.

We had extra rooms, but we were only able to separate them by us splitting up and sitting in separate rooms with each one of them, one of us to keep the fun-time one occupied without looking for his pal, and the other to spend time with one that liked to sleep, so she still got her dose of cuddles to help her relax without the fun-time one needing to be in on the action all of the time. :joy:

I’ve hit the confirm button eek - the HO suggested that we meet up with the dogs once we’ve arrived in Perth so I trusted my gut feeling, and tbh 3 nights…. What could go wrong? :face_with_peeking_eye::joy:
I think the HO liked that we’d be local anyway so less likely to cancel and there being two of us as well…… plus I’m not saying the swimming pool also got my attention but a few days chilling with dogs and a pool sounds lovely.
Well I’ve done it now…. :heavy_check_mark:

Love that, always trust your intuition and you can not go wrong

@BonnyinBrighton my advice will be to get an anchor sit for a longer time (doesn’t have to be in Perth) and then get a few shorter sits on each end. At least that’s what worked for us. We didn’t have to join any other sites and we spent the maximum allowed 3 months in Oz.

Tbh it does have to be in Perth as that’s where our son and DiL are hende the motivation for future years building a few trusted regulars….that utilise us between November to February. We would aim to work around their dates in years to come as we have lots of flexibility. That’s the big plan anyway.

@BonnyinBrighton as you are a planner and like to be prepared , I would suggest that you ask about the vet arrangements for all of the pets including the visiting one -

Which vet(s) are they registered with ?
( Possibly not all will be registered at same local vet)
Who will you be contacting for decisions if any medical emergency for the visiting pet ( this might not be the THS member ?
Who will cover vet bills of visiting pet ( if an emergency arises )

A video call is useful but not essential.

I also recommend exchanging mobile numbers asap as a backup method of communication to the THS platform . (We have frequently experienced that messages on the platform are not seen by hosts )

@ziggy I’ve mentioned Aussie Housesitters to Bonny too, as my friends in WA use them as its free for the HO, but maybe she just doesn’t want to use them.

I think I mentioned them to @BonnyinBrighton a while ago too
