Car Insurance

Hi, I’m sure that this question has been asked before but I just wanted to get some up to date advice. We are doing a two week sit in the USA in July and the home owner has offered us the use of their car for the two weeks. How does this work in terms of the car insurance? Do I need to get my own or ask the home owner to add me to their policy? Thanks

@Paul66
I think it depends on the state.
I did a sit in Sacramento and all that was required from me was a copy of my drivers license and intentional driving permit.
It probably also depends on the HO in regards to getting your own or being added to policy. p
someone here will probably have better information for you.
cheers
F

Ask the host, because insurance policies differ. Mine allows temporary drivers such as guests / friends. But it has nothing to do with my U.S. state — I’ve moved among states and kept the same insurer and policy.

who “required” a copy of your license and permit?

(Edit: Dang, this was in the list of topics looking all current, and I didn’t see it was originally posted in March :roll_eyes: … can’t delete it I guess. Think I’ll quit and go to bed now :woozy_face:)

I would say, check your own insurance and see if you are covered for “non-owned vehicles” (and for how much$), and also ask the owner if anyone else can drive their car under their insurance. One or the other of you might have to add something.
I carry insurance for non-owned vehicles, and I prefer to rent if I can because if something happens to the car, even if someone backs into it in a parking lot and not my fault, then it’s just on my side of things to deal with and not inconvenience for the homeowner, and a possible blot on my sitter record if they mention it in a review.
