Hi,
Just wondered how much clothing people take when doing a year of house sits, especially travelling by car.
My BMW X3 is full !
Sorrry don’t mean to laugh but you will wean and widdle down with time. I started with a pickup truck loaded with gadgets, even a lawn chair and a juicer.
I’m down to a 30L backpack. Wash one wear one. Phone, iPad, charger, one pair of shoes. Pen notebook, glasses…
That’s enough.
Fill the indicators with socks and underwear, BMW drivers don’t use them
This very much depends on climate. My wife and I have travelled extensively but pack differently depending on climate. When we sit in warm countries we travel with Columbia type clothing which can be washed and dried overnight. This stuff is light and scrunches up nicely. When we travel in cold climates we travel with Uniqlo thermal stuff which can be layered. Even though we travel VERY light we always seem to have too much gear. Another tip is, if you get caught out visit an OP shop and get what you need and donate what you don’t need.
This is pure #mimimalismgoals!
I’ve flown all over Europe with just a cabin bag for 2-4 weeks stay. The cabin bag also includes my laptop as I remotely work. I’ve got it down to a fine art now!! I travel in the bulky stuff (jeans, tshirt, sweater and jacket) and pack 3 days worth of underwear, socks and tshirts. Yes I have to do a lot of washing but it saves me a ton of money to pay extra on hold luggage…or maybe I’m a tight Yorkshireman!
I also travel with a small cross body sling that I stick my passport, phone, tablet, usb cable and battery in when flying.
Pretty much my style too. I never take check in luggage.
made me giggle! We have a little clio when we’re sitting in the UK both the boot and the back seats are full when we arrive at places. We have 2 smallish suitcases, and 2 backpacks, 2 sleeping bags (just incase), an airfryer, spare cleaning materials (to make life easier), wellies, a couple of pairs of trainers, and lots of coats to suit every season… it’s the uk so it’s rain one minute and sunny the next. Plus random stuff, laptops, books etc. We have whittled it down a lot, but the car still ends up full somehow.
When we sit abroad, we simply take 1 backpack + 1 carrier bag each with us so we can just walk on the plane with them, and we love it that way, if we could do that in the uk then we would, but it rains a lot so we need to be prepared with wellies and big coats etc.
All of our family know not to give us any gifts that don’t fit in the car .
We now make it a habit of ‘doing-out-the-car’ every few months, just to charity some more items, and streamline it more… but it never seems to go down.
We also have zero posh/going-out clothes in the UK now, they are all practical muddy paws type of clothes, so no posh restaurants for us!
That’s impressive! I could do with somebody like you looking over my shoulder cracking the whip as I try to whittle down my stuff for a two week trip to Norway tomorrow!
sounds awesome, where in Norway? Which animals?
I was invited to look after a lovely dog in Oslo so this will be my second visit to that beautiful city. Last time I was there was 9 years ago visiting purely as a tourist but returning tomorrow as a sitter for two weeks. Should be fun!
After originally starting out with a bag that needed a front end loader to lift it, I now travel with a two wheeled duffle bag which is cabin bag size for most airlines. I also have a small day backpack, which fits under the airline seat, that I carry all my little extras in e.g. passport, toiletries, change of clothes and anything else that can fit in it. Funny thing is, my bag is so small but to this day I haven’t used or worn half the contents, now getting rid of excess to reduce size and weight even further. If you don’t have it, chances are you never needed it and as @Oztravels says, utilise Op shops if necessary. Buy, use, re-donate. This trip for me is for a year, at home in Oz I have my car to overload as much as possible
I have just found out that we packed a bath mat!
Don’t be sorry just yet @Twogreys we did one month long sit and they had no spare towels, no spare bedding, no hand towels, no tea towels and no bath mats!! And it was monsoon season (plus we travel only with cabin bags on 6 month+ trips so that was a shocker) #youjustneverknow #brendaistops
My husband and I are completely nomadic, we go back to our storage unit or a clothes stash at my parents 1-2 times per year.
I travel with a carry-on suitcase. I have 2 pairs of shoes with me at all times and minimal clothes and toiletries .
Lately my husband and I rely on thrift stores to rotate our clothes. It can be handy to get climate and region appropriate clothes - he picked up some nice beach shirts in Australia but they weren’t so stylish for Europe. In Vienna we had a long sit and he found a nice suit for 25€ which served for the opera and a few special events- but stored it with family when we returned to the US.
It’s fun for us to try to wear out our clothes to the point of needing to toss them. Then we feel really satisfied!
When we had a car in one country we definitely took more like kitchen supplies, spices, coffee setup. But, he’s pretty picky about that sort of thing.
I’m hopeless. While in the UK I travel to housesits in my car and currently have a suitcase and large bag full of clothes, bags of food & drink, dumbbells and kettlebells, a big bag full of books, a picnic chair, walking poles and a briefcase with my important papers & stationery, two small backpacks full of stuff. When I was travelling/Housesitting around NZ & Aus I just had one suitcase and a carry on backpack! I’m impressed by people who manage to travel with just a backpack but, invariably, they’re travelling by public transport.
How do you manage with one pair of shoes? I have walking boots, Skechers, two pairs of trainers (one for indoors and one outdoors - for exercise not walking), a pair of Crocs flip flops, Wellington boots, sandals & slippers!
I have only one pair of shoes too. And one pair of outdoor trousers that dry quickly, so I can wash them in the evening and use them again the next day.
@Chatsetchiens
That sounds wonderful. Yes, Oslo is great. I have been there a few times. Enjoy!
Guessing you don’t go to the gym then….
