I set up the duo sitter option, and even though my husband’s background check is not completed yet, it seems we are able to start doing overlaps. I just tested it. I am booked through November 19th and was able to apply to a sit that started November 17th.
One thing that is important to know about this is that if you book overlapping sits, THS says it will notify hosts , so it is definitely important to discuss this beforehand.
It is open for anyone to sign up. I first noticed it when looking for sits…it was showing up in the feed. Also, if you view your profile, you will see an option to verify the second sitter under the section where your name and heading are. You can also see this when you click on the ‘Your Profile’ from the dashboard and click on the ‘manage’ button next to the verification section. This was all on the website, not sure what it looks like on the app.
I’m still undecided about joining as we would be very unlikely to do an overlapping sit but would be interested in contacting hosts who have flexible dates to discuss our availability …
Yes I figured it couldn’t hurt. In all the years we have been sitting, we actually very rarely did overlapping sits. So when they took that option away, it actually didn’t affect us much in reality.
It is definitely helpful for reaching out about date flexibility as depending on the location of each sit, it may not always be possible to overlap.
In the US for example, my husband and I travel by car and often do sits that require one. So in many cases, it would be difficult to separate if public transport options were not readily available, or the distance was too far for the person staying behind to drive the other to the next sit and keep the car, or for the person who started the next sit to pick the other up when the first one finishes.
Thanks. It’s offered on the app too, though most people wouldn’t know about it because how often does one go in to edit their profile? An extra $3.75 per month though. We’ll see about next summer when we’re not already booked.
I think that’s poor form from HQ. If you’re responsible enough to manage two sits that overlap, then you as the sitters can manage the comms with the hosts. THS messaging for you/us undermines the direct relationship. The limit on 48 hours overlap is also a bit random. They’re marketing it as $2 a month in some places @alegría#unconvinced
The price doesn’t seem too high since it does cover an additional person being verified BUT…
I am concerned that with DUO Sitter THS will message the hosts of my already confirmed sit when I APPLY for an overlapping sit .
We might not even be confirmed for that sit so no need to have informed the first host at the APPLICATION stage .
We most likely wouldn’t be wanting to overlap , merely use the APPLY function to contact the hosts who say that their sit dates are flexible to advise them that we have another sit but could start / end on x date. So it’s not necessary at all to inform the first hosts as their sit won’t be impacted .
This along with the feedback from sitters in the Beta trial that felt they lost out on sits because of this over messaging .
We will need a lot more to convince us that Duo Sitter will be a benefit us .
I would imagine they would only send this once confirmed. A sitter could apply for numerous sits over a long period of time potentially and I wouldn’t see the purpose of THS informing a host of this activity.
I am sure this is being done to cover themselves. While I imagine most hosts are fine with this and most sitters do get the okay for one person to leave early, it would be very easy for sitters to do this without the host knowing.
I know there were a couple of times I didn’t mention it. It wasn’t because I was trying to be sneaky, it was because I didn’t think it really mattered as it didn’t affect anything on the original sit.
Even then many probably still wouldn’t care. But some might and on the off chance something went wrong, or they were just merely uncomfortable with the arrangement and wouldn’t have agreed to it, they can make a good case that they are entitled to be made aware.
That some may not have felt it necessary to inform hosts is likely the main reason many sitters will be upset about this notification policy. Now that it will required to get the host’s ‘okay’ ahead of time, there is the risk some may not be okay with it.
If being able to book overlaps is important it could be a good idea to ask hosts right upfront whether they are okay with this…for some sitters it may become a new deal breaker.
And knowing ahead of time can also make it easier to apply and accept an overlap since you already know it isn’t an issue. You don’t have to worry about possible delays on hearing back from hosts on whether they would mind before applying to/and or confirming the other sit.
By the time the beta test was ready to launch , we were full for this year so have yet had the opportunity to try it out.
However, the flaw I can see in the system is that the overlap can’t be ‘revealed’ to both hosts, as a booking must have already been confirmed without an overlap in place, for the second overlapping booking to occur.
Yes I was wondering if a message goes out to the first hosts to say that xx is applying for a sit that overlaps with yours …( the one that’s already confirmed )
From this screenshot of the process- you have to agree that both hosts are advised and it appears that this is at the application stage
@Silversitters - in case useful then our understanding re DuoSitter feature:
housesitter apply for 48 hours overlap. so if confirmed housesit 10-20 January then an application could be made for a housesit commencing 18 January or 19 January
both pet parents somehow are notified by THS, at the time of application for overlapping housesit. probably text as per your screenshot above
if pet parent has many applicants then pet parent would seem to need a compelling reason to accept a housesitter that has an overlapping housesit. so Duo feature probably limited value for popular listings or for housesitters without excellent profile/reviews
Duo feature perhaps of higher value-add for full-time sitters (great possible usage); sitters in non-popular locations (previously functionally unable to accept overlapping sits); and/or sitters with excellent profile/reviews (competitive advantage)
