Farm Sitters

I have been reading through the blog pages and came across this article .

It suggests that you can find a farm sitter on THS - the benefits of a farm sitter

“ Alongside daily feeding and cleaning, farm sitters can also patrol your land, look for any damages in your fencing, and complete additional chores such as minor DIY jobs.…
it adds

Organise a training day beforehand

Each farm and its animals have their own quirks and chores, so a run-through or training day can help cover all the bases.”

Doesn’t this contradict this article which says

“Please note that sitters are not expected to complete any tasks that are considered ‘work’. This may include helping a pet parent maintain any business they have. “

I think it does but, to be honest, I think THS advertising concentrates in making as much business as possible regardless of the consequences for both sitters and HOs. So it’s up to us to try and find the best possible matches.

It would be great to print this article together with the infamous letter and show it to border guards . That would convince them that sitting is not “work”

That sounds more like a work away arrangement than THS and a full training day beforehand is quite an ask on an unpaid gig. IMHO THS need to stick to their core business of domestic sits or set up a trustedfarmsitters-dot-com as a different branch of the main business. #wellspotted

There is a difference between hosts who keep a few sheep, goats or pigs as a hobby, and a full blown farm business. This article does seem to cross the line into working in a business.

I agree that that seems like a professional (paid) job. In many countries it is diffficult getting agricultural staff, so one is also better off getting a paid job. Not to mention insurance if something serious happens.

Hi, @Newpetlover, I’m curious about the “Infamous letter.” What did I miss?

It’s the letter THS recommends to show at the border when sitting internationally .
Nobody except THS thinks this is a good idea, it’s supposed to prove that sitting is not work. I was only joking.

Thanks for sending this link. I don’t recall ever getting this when I sat internationally, but I’m sure that’s on me. Don’t think I’d trust this letter going up against a border agent in a cranky mood…
