Fed up with the Forum

It still notifies you of their posts if they are responding to you or in one of your threads.

Yeah, that’s exactly why I don’t post about my issues.
Sometimes people make mistakes, we are all human. Sometimes people don’t know how to cope. Sometimes owners or sitters are downright mean and whoever posts doesn’t know what to do as a result. If you then get judged by someone as being babyish or not taking responsibility, it’s not exactly going to help anyone.

I don’t post very much in the forum. Often, when asking for advice/clarity, it does feel and look like a pile-on of unwarranted criticism and judgement by some of the regular posters - it’s like they are just sitting on the sidelines, waiting to pounce. I do not find the forum a particularly supportive environment at all really, which is a pity.

Exactly.

And this reply illustrates why I avoid posting on certain threads.
I try to accept others point of views but I also expect others to accept mine.
Damn …… I blame the rum.
Bye, for another few weeks.

In that case you can add them to Ignored and Muted

Also whole sections of the Forum could be muted through this setting

Yes I find some people just think they are right all of the time. Everyone has there own point of you and the answer is sometimes somewhere intbetween.

I’ve done that. But if it was a thread I started they still show. We need a block feature.

This is meant in a humorous way and I reckon there are quite a few others who are thinking the same lol.

Human nature tells me, “ooh, am I one of the people this is being directed at”?:rofl: I can definitely put my guilty hand up for some of the comments but I am always well intended :person_raising_hand:

Sorry if I am an offender, I think a lot of us have been guilty at some point. Time for a “forum free refresh”.

As usual @Snowbird you respond wisely and maybe I’ll stick with the forum but do as you suggest. Thank you

@Smiley Phew!! :see_no_evil::hear_no_evil::speak_no_evil::rofl:

Not on my naughty list (yet) :joy:

Well. One person who has massively annoyed me has not posted in this thread. They never comment on such topics. Of course I will not name names

@Twitcher I’ll have to behave for awhile, just in case

Sounds like you need a break. Take one & when you come back just dismiss all new posts and start fresh.

Yes. I work full-time+ and that takes a lot of my energy, plus the usual responsibilities. Cannot be bothered with some random THS forum poster berating me, even stalking me via passive-aggressive snide comments in other threads, all over saying that I will not operate a lawn mower or tractor on a sit. I just figure people like that have too much time on their hands and also lack empathy.

That’s your prerogative so what’s the problem, just scroll.

Same applies to this comment…

Hello everyone

@Smiley - thank you for raising this with us. It’s a shame that you’re feeling frustrated with the Forum at the moment, but you’ve started a discussion that has some really useful feedback for the Forum team to consider.

Apologies that this is a bit of a long post, we wanted to try and cover everything!

Negativity, conflict, and trolling

A few of you have commented on negativity on the Forum, whether it’s members being aggressive or critical, or not being respectful when there’s a difference of opinion. Our Community Guidelines ask that everyone is kind and courteous, even if they don’t agree with what someone’s said.

While the Forum team does their best to deal with these incidents, we’d also encourage you to flag any offending posts to us, and we’ll take care of them. It’s also a good idea for members to not engage with negativity, although we know that can be hard. Please be assured that while the Forum team can see who has flagged a post, we do not inform any flagged user of who flagged them.

It sounds like there are a few members who already choose to not engage in controversial topics. This is great advice for anyone looking to improve their Forum experience. We can’t avoid difficult conversations (though the Forum team can manage them), so sometimes it’s best to choose to stay away, whenever needed.

We hear what you’re saying about the need for a proper block function, but the advice from Discourse (the platform we use) is that members should use the ignore function. We acknowledge that some of you have mentioned that this doesn’t work in the way that you want it to. While we can’t currently provide a more robust blocking function, if members report posts that break Community Guidelines, we can work directly with repeat offenders to see if the Forum is the right place for them.

New members not using the search function

This is a bit of a tough one! While the Forum team can certainly look at ways to educate new users on how to find existing topics about similar issues, it’s not something that we can enforce. If the Forum team can find a more obvious way to guide new members to the search function, we can absolutely do that, but in the meantime, it’s best to scroll on if you’re not interested in revisiting a topic. Better still, we’d love to see you start a new topic, to keep things balanced!

Long posts with no paragraphs

Everyone’s writing skills are different, so members should feel free to write as they want, as long as it’s coherent, sticks to the Community Guidelines, and isn’t in all caps. We can see how a wall of text might be challenging for many people to read, though. Would it be useful if the Forum team were to moderate those kinds of posts for clarity i.e. add in paragraph breaks?

In closing

This feedback is incredibly useful, and while we can’t make any immediate changes, we can absolutely look at where we can make improvements moving forward based on what you’ve told us. We want you all to feel welcome here, and comfortable reading and posting, so we’ll do our best to make that happen.

Thanks for being so open with us.

Jenny
