Thanks for the update.
I don’t think they should be allowed in THS as their situation breaks T&Cs.
5.1.12. only use the Services for domestic and private use, and will not use the Services in connection with any business or other organisation or for any commercial purpose whatsoever;
HORRIBLE!!! Contact support, I hope they are booted off TH. If I arrived to a situation like that I be so appalled, I don’t even know what I would have done because ethically that is so unacceptable to me. But not being truthful, that is awful, and now lying and accusing you of damage? The worst. I hope that you can get some support from TH!
I’m so sorry for you @Mexicobound , and I wish you all the best for the dispute handling. I know when we are faced with traumatic situations we just handle it as best we can - and it seems you have done and endured so much more than could be expected.
So again - this is soo not normal. I hope you will have a really welcoming, friendly and nice sit with happy and lovable pets in the future. You’ve had your quota, for sure!
I’m sorry that your first experience as a TH was so terrible. For your own sake and for future sitters, please open a dispute with TH. The homeowners, as breeders, broke the rules and should be removed. It is not allowed for business owners to use TH to manage their business. So aside from misrepresenting the number of dogs you were to care for, they should not have been on the platform to begin with.
I hope that you documented the situation (e.g. pictures of the ten expensive dogs that show that the HO is a backyard breeder, not a pet owner). Please send pictures, text messages, any online communication (e.g. number of dogs, your duties, etc.) to TH so that they can properly investigate and rule on your dispute. Be sure and collect “hard” evidence asap so the H.O. do not alter or remove it.
I have 30 plus five star reviews and always worked on the basis of trust and mutual respect, until the one H.O. couple that made outrageous untrue claims against me because they wanted their home back a month early. Fortunately, I had Whatsup and text communications from them to prove that they were lying. Otherwise I might have been the one removed from the platform!
So my advice to newbies, which I follow now myself, is to trust but verify: Have everything in writing; take pictures upon arrival (this also helps you return everything to it’s proper place). Report any issues (leaky pipe, insects etc.) as soon as you notice them; ask for the Welcome Guide early and follow up with questions; always do a video chat prior to arrival.
Clear expectations and good communication will protect both you and the homeowners from misunderstandings and/or misrepresentationss.
Best of luck on your next sit!
P.S. My experiences on TH have been overwhelmingly positive. I have made friendships with H.O. that are ongoing and they often call me before posting to see if I am available for a future sit. Please don’t let this one bad experience discourage you from taking future sits.
Nothing to add to the good advice offered here, but just offering my sympathies for the horrible, extreme experience you just lived through! Not only is it not normal, it’s way way beyond horrible for THS. And yes, please do come back if you will and let us know the outcome after you file a complaint with THS. And I hope your next sit is a good one, so you can know what IS normal here! Take care.
Thank you! I sent all my documentation to TH, including photos and a video of the dogs fightings, well a video of me screaming to stop as I dropped the phone as I tore them apart. This community makes me feel welcome.
I am a bit nervous to write a review. I would rather them be removed. I am a local sit, and even though it may not be an issue, they know my home address.
The challenge there @Mexicobound is that if they are not removed and somehow manage to convince THS they should stay then future sitters will walk into the same nightmare. Have you contacted THS support and asked for advice and support? If not definitely do this asap to protect yourself. #wishingyouwell
Thank you to this community. I did report the listing with the TH dispute forum and with local authorities. I have 3 rescue dogs and treat them with undeniable love, compassion and friendship. The hardest thing was leaving these dogs and puppies in a (pretty much) 24 hour crate environment. No toys, no blankets, etc. The lack of gratitude from the HO is unfounded. No thank you, instead “you broke this”, “you left this mess”; which I completely denied and asked for photos (non received). I finally told the HO lto stop contacting me and contract TH directly. As I left my first sit with scratches, bruises and no sleep; at least I gave them the attention every animal needs and wants, even for a few days. And, I learned what to ask, photos to take and overall important information to gain as a sitter.
It is, of course, your choice but if you have filed the dispute, they know. A non emotional, factual review nicely written can’t be bad (not worse than a dispute or being removed) and will be helpful for THS community.
I do hope your next experience will be a great one, which is really standard for most people.
Thanks for the feedback. All the best, whatever you decide.
If you find yourself in a similar situation at handover before the hosts leave, you can call the Urgent Support Phone Line and leave the sit before it starts .
I suggest that you also send photos of the injuries that you received (scratches bruises) to THS and request that that include this information in the member dispute that you have already raised with them .
(Pets with a history of attacks on humans or other pets are not permitted on the platform)
Follow up with an e-Mail and ask THS on what date you can expect them to complete the member dispute investigation and report back to you . It should be within 30 days of when you raised the dispute.
Do you have other sits confirmed on THS ? ensure that you have contact details for these sits as sometimes THS pause your membership whilst investigating a dispute and you may not be able to contact the hosts of future sits during that time unless you have their phone numbers .
If you can find a way to write a review it would be really helpful to the next sitter, but ofc I can see why you hesitate. I believe it is always possible to give the nudges needed to other sitters and the community in general in a nice way.
The host might get only a warning from THS and write you a review. So I’m not sure there is much gained in not writing it. It could be useful to write a review that shows that no matter what they write, you did your best under the conditions, and you are factual and a nice person.
If I should make an example, something in the line of
" For this sit there were significantly more dogs than listed. The dogs were high-energy and required constant supervision due to their breeding status. The dogs live in a crate environment and to ensure a good match sitters should inquire about pet practices to be sure they are comfortable with it. I did my best to maintain the routine of the dogs and provide them with attention and care, but it could be useful to be a couple - so many dogs for one person can be a challenge. It is useful to have experienced dog-people because the dogs got into fights, and I had to intervene to keep them safe."
This is an excellent example of what to write @Mexicobound and I highly recommend you use some, or all of this. Its direct, polite and fair, which will allow future sitters an educated choice to apply for the sit or not.
I had a bad experience the other way round, with a sitter. I was encouraged to contact THS support and found them very helpful. As a result of their involvement, the people involved are no longer here. I would urge you to report your experience as it sounds shocking.
I’d also suggest you find out if the people concerned are registered breeders. Check with the Kennel Club and local council where they are based. It doesn’t sound as if their animals are being taken care of properly.
The important takeaway is that THS is not a “service” for either hosts or sitters. It is a matching site. They don’t vet hosts. The vetting for sitters – criminal background checks in the US, and reference requirement is minimal. We’ve all learned workarounds to stay safe. It’s not hard to find great sits, but it’s easy to stumble into nightmares.
