File under things I never thought I'd deal with while housesitting

In the US people are replacing irons with clothes steamers. They all look different and come in different sizes. You can even buy inexpensive portable ones to travel with.

Fair play to you for being able to fix it!!!

Had this happen to us. Small apartment which we knew from photos but didn’t notice till we arrived that there was no table in the combined living room and kitchen area. Not even a coffee or side table! So nothing to eat off of but our laps.

Also found out there was no hot water in the kitchen, which when we contacted the HOs, they admitted they hadn’t gotten around to dealing with. So how had they been sanitizing the dishes, silverware, glasses, etc. in the kitchen that we’d been eating off?? We contacted the building management (it was a rental) and they fixed it right away so they were not the problem. The HOs just hadn’t bothered to deal with this. Other issues, too, even though HOs were nice. Glad it was only a short sit.

I neglected to ask if the exterior doors locked, simply assuming they did. I found out the side door had no lock, it was a cottage style old wooden door with shutters and a hook. I’m sure the owner felt the neighborhood was very safe as it was a gated community that she knew well but I was uncomfortable.

Probably boiled the kettle to get hot water, or used a large saucepan.

Younger adults I know don’t even own a clothes iron or steamer. At the other end of the age spectrum, my grandmother ironed her sheets. Clearly, the world has been swirling down the drain for generations.

I iron my sheets, and I also iron my drying cloths (having first boiled them in a saucepan for an hour or so).

You think they were doing that for months rather than simply calling building management as we did and having them do what was a quick repair?

Nope. I’m sure they were just washing everything in cold water and were fine with that.

@NETime sometimes things just drift on and people forget that things used to be any different. :person_shrugging:

Hahaha! I spent HOURS researching quartz countertop repair and calling potential repair companies and SCRUBBING maniacally trying to buff out a ring on the counter, that I thought I’d done in a moment of hungry fatigued mental absence (DID I set that pot down for just a second before I remembered the trivet??) … the house was otherwise spotless and very posh, and I thought Mrs HO would have a seizure when she saw it. I was packed & ready to leave a day early in case they were mad enough to kick me out when they got home… quaking in my boots I began, “I think I did this…” and she said, offhandedly, “Oh, I did that last year.” AUGH!!! The WG said “don’t put hot pots on the counter” but she forgot to point out “because this is what can happen, I did this” and I didn’t see it until after they left and the angle of light had changed. I just about cried. We all had a laugh. I got a great review.

… … …

I’d never have imagined having to get up at 4 a.m. to clean a litterbox placed in the bedroom closet a few feet from the bed because a cat with “digestive issues” stunk up the whole bedroom so much that I’d never have got back to sleep. (Who puts the litter box in the bedroom closet? Under the hanging clothes? Everything in there was covered in clay dust. :face_with_spiral_eyes: )

That was so funny - so what does Alexa do when the power is down? She scares me my friend said something to me at it said ‘ I don’t like what you said’ - who asked you Alexa just go away!

…Also never thought I might find myself wandering around a large yard and roadside at nearly midnight with a flashlight, looking for a cat who should come in after a running pack of neighborhood dogs and a speeding car went by, carrying a broom in case I needed to fend off said dogs, worrying that they’d pursue my little guy and what if they attacked him or chased him in front of a car.
He was fine. He was probably sitting in the shadows in the opposite direction watching me wander around and call him, because he met me at the door when I gave up looking and went back to the house.

That’s a terrible feeling.

I was sitting a cat and a year-old dog. The cat came in every evening, but one night, when I was taking the dog out for her last pee, she tried to pounce on the cat and scared her outside. I called and called for the cat, but she wouldn’t come back.

I spent the night on the couch, waking every two hours or so to call her. It was cold and I was so worried for her, like maybe she’d suffer or get hit by a car at night.

Then I woke at dawn and looked for her again, ready to call for her, and she’s on the front walkway, moseying along.

I know many pet owners come with a variety of special set ups for food, sleep or :other:

One of my sits was a «first»:

Starting the playlist of the pet. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Actually, the pet had several playlists. Mostly soft jazz. So now you know what to try!

One of my sit cats liked opera. Lucky for him, I also like some opera. His primary human was Italian. I also spoke broken Italian to the cat. Don’t know whether he understood me, but I entertained myself.

We were told that we should leave Alexa playing music by “ColdPlay” for the cat when we went out.

We did play a variety of music for ourselves but we did notice that the quite anxious cat was very chilled when we played Coldplay .

Obviously something familiar that the owners listened to often .

We’re early 50s and don’t own an iron (gave ours away along with the microwave) or a steamer! We just buy clothes that don’t need ironing  My mum on the other hand irons absolutely everything including sheets and pants! #lifestooshorttoiron
