Housesitting With Your Own Pooch

Hi All…
Hope you are all well. So after 10 years on trusted and looking after HUNDREDS of little furry friends we are at last going to get our own! Still undecided…daschund or lab…time will tell.
So my question is…how many pet parents/house owners out there would allow housesitters to bring their own dog?
Thanks in advance.

Hi @Fionabarton1970
I read previous reviews on my house owners, I’ve often read that the sitters dog has gone with them. On one of my favourite dog sits, the person before and after me took their dog. There are definitely sits out there where you can take your own dog, but not as many. All the best

It seems a number of people on here sit with their dogs so it is certainly possible. The only thing is that since the vast majority of listings don’t address this issue directly, you have no way of knowing how the host feels about it. So as long as you are prepared for the possibility of having to apply to more sits, and having a higher ratio of rejections to acceptances, you will probably do just fine with it.

I have 2 shy cats that have learned to tolerate my dog but an outside dog would stress them out, so it would be a no for me.

If we only had the dog - it wouldn’t be a problem as my dog is very friendly with other dogs. But - I would ask about breed and temperament/training/history of your dog, so if you want more ‘yes’ answers one thing you can do is make sure your dog is trained, socialized, and well-mannered (not excessively barky, for instance, to not annoy neighbors. And of course 100 percent potty trained and not destructive to household items).

Good luck, and enjoy your pup!

I’ve seen reviews with people sitting with their own dogs and it looks like its been a positive experience all round

I’ve had 4 sitters that brought their dogs. For me it’s a plus. Gives my pup someone to play with.

@Kima
I think its lovely to do that. Just shows that their are nice pet owners out there who like to invite sitters with their own pets :grinning:

@Fionabarton1970 The key here is to mention that you’re traveling w/your pet upfront – state it in your application and sitter profile, describe your pup’s behaviors, and do include a photo. :slight_smile:

That way, homeowners can decide at that moment whether to pursue your application. Many HOs allow it but many do not. Best of luck!
