Is this setup in breach of the third-party policy?

You mention they have had other sitters @august. Was there any reference to the issues you are encountering in the reviews by sitters?

@temba
19 reviews. Only one review mentions that the dog is not to be walked. Also, only one review mentions that the owners ā€œmade them feel at home with their neighborly closeness.ā€

Most of the sits were 2-3 days. Couple of them were 1 week long

@august So not much to go on in the reviews, especially where they were generally very short sits. I know you’ll highlight in your review the concerns you have. It’s an uncomfortable situation and it’s a little awkward too, where your host rents from these people and obviously is affected by their behaviour too. I think I’d try to just ignore the owners and let the dog enjoy more time outside as I feel sorry for the dog.

This is exactly what I am doing. Ignoring the owners and sitting with the dog outside as long as I can. The dog is amazing

Very disappointing that you can’t take the dog out for walks. I’ve had the odd reactive dog before but have taken them out at times and places less likely to come across other dogs but if another dog appears, crossing the road or changing direction. I would hate a sit where I couldn’t properly exercise a dog.

You’ve been given some good advice. Hope you can hang on in there, although I appreciate it must be difficult. Definitely the owners should have discussed this situation and you must put it in your review.

How long can you leave the dog?

Hang sheets over the windows. Open the window, lean out and ask them why they keep walking through your yard.

It is indeed. I discussed this with the hosts and mentioned that I would love to walk her, but they feel uncomfortable letting sitters do so. Apparently, the host believes she is the only one who knows how to handle the dog and avoid encounters with other neighborhood dogs. While I believe this arrangement might work for short sits, my stay is 3.5 weeks long. This is why uncomplicated access to the yard is so important.

4 hours - in a crate. I“ve only done it twice.

We had a not dissimilar situation (I described it in my review for other sitters’ awareness). The top floor of a large property was given over to the HO’s staff for their Business in town. The staff had a separate entrance but shared the laundry room in the garage (there was a rota!). The biggest issue for us anyway was the staff sunbathing on the roof of the house which they accessed via their windows, and smoking and chatting with shirts off and music blaring whilst we relaxed in the garden….they did shifts so were often there until lunchtime or in the late afternoons or early evenings. I really disliked it.

@BonnyinBrighton THANK YOU for mentioning the noise your review.

If those facts had not been disclosed by the homeowners prior to our accepting the sit, I really think we would leave the sit.

There was a rota (rooster) in the laundry room but sunbathing workers was the big problem! Something must be missing in translation.

Wow! This is something worth of the language corner!
Are you kidding or you don’t use ā€œrotaā€ with that meaning in the States?

Edited to add I think it’s a joke and I missed the rooster/roster bit

It’s early in my day pre coffee and blurry eyed. We don’t use ā€œrotaā€ in the states so I looked it up. I read ā€œrosterā€ as ā€œroosterā€ and my day has gone downhill ever since. Off to get my espresso fix and jumpstart my brain.

But, no, we don’t use ā€œrosterā€ stateside to mean ā€œrotationā€ and ā€œrotaā€ is a new addition to my obviously inadequate vocabulary.

Thanks. I always love to learn about language.

I thought you meant there was a rotation schedule for everyone using the laundry facilities :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: #learnedanewterm

wait, you did mean rotation after all?
I may need a nap. lol

I watch Coronation Street and the bar staff are often complaining about ā€˜The Rota’ so I knew what it meant.

Make the best of it. I would introduce myself and offer some cookies or muffins if they should happen to be outside. Perhaps ask if there is anything that could be done to help them out. This is part of the deal when landlords are on-site.
