Listings slipping through the Net

I applied on a local sit a couple of months ago where the homeowner read my application immediately but never responded. It appeared he closed and relisted the posting more than once. He’s had a string of dates listed and they reach the “reviewing applications” stage and then are deleted. To this day, I’m not sure if anyone has ever sat for this homeowner as he has no reviews. He currently has another date listed showing as “reviewing” applications once again. I’ve thought of reporting this listing to THS as I’m sure other sitters have applied on the numerous dates but I don’t think anyone has yet to sit for him so feel like he’s wasting sitter’s time and something is not right with this listing although nothing in the listing contravenes any THS rules. Feedback - should I contact THS? I’m leaning towards that as it’s wasting the time of sitters and discourteous as well.

Hi @Globetrotter

It might be worth checking in with MS about this, even just to ask if they could give the HO a nudge about best practice (and etiquette!) when listing a sit. That way they can take a look and maybe get a sense of anything that doesn’t feel quite right.

Have the rules changed where the homeowner is now allowed to stay home and just have the sitter live there to take care of their animals? This listed sit says the homeowner plans to be home 1/4 of the time so the sitter needs to feel comfortable sharing the house with them. I thought that was against the rules? Does THS approve listings before they are posted?

(edited by Forum team to remove a link to someone’s listing, and post has been moved to an ongoing discussion around listings that have slipped through the net.)

Hi @anon80150770

Thanks for sharing this listing - I’ve removed it from your post as it’s against Community Guidelines to share listings on the Forum - but I have passed the listing over to the team and explained what the issue is.

There shouldn’t be a third party at a sit, the rules haven’t changed, so I’m glad you’ve let us know about it.

Just to update you, the team have explained with regards to the first listing, “new” in this instance means new dates rather than new listings, so it sounds like the listing initially must have passed checks and then been updated by the owner. The listing seems to be removed now.

For the second one, that was human error, so we’re glad you brought it up. One of our Team Leaders will be feeding back about that, and I can see the owner has updated their photos now

Thanks Jenny - I’ll forward this particular listing to support services/MS.

Hi @jenny,
I have just seen and reported a listing that unfortunately breaks the third party policy and involves youths & social workers using the home during the pet sit. Thought I would also post here in case THS email doesn’t get back, as this is quite alarming & has implications for child safeguarding. I can also forward the link to you if that helps :+1:

@Nagy26 ,

If you DM the link, I’ll notify MS, as well.

Hmm… just saw a listing which, in the responsibilities section, says “check on holiday cottage nextdoor.” No other mention of or explanation about this holiday cottage, so no idea what that means/entails. Is this something to alert THS about @Maeve?

It’s phrased in a way that could mean anything but I think that’s probably on purpose so that they may get applications from people willing to help with their business, which would be against T&Cs. If contacted by MS, they can also say that they only want the sitters to keep the property safe and that’s what they mean by “checking on cottage”.
Very often those owners who want to bend the rules just learn to change the wording of their listings but not the reality of the sit requirements. I guess there is not much we can do apart from reporting and not accepting those sits.

Right… Oh dear. So do you think I should report it?

Not really sure the way it’s phrased will be enough to make THS take some sort of action. Up to you.
Are there any reviews that suggest extra work or something like that?
If you do, will you please update?

There’s just one review, but it’s 5 stars & all positive comments. So I really don’t know :woman_shrugging:t3:

@Nagy26 , you can always DM these links to a moderator who will send them on to Membership Services, or you can send them to MS yourself. MS prefers to be notified via chat but they can be reached by email, as well.

Good point.
There are currently 8,481 sits listed on THS.
I’m sure they haven’t been vetted.
As has been suggested in this thread, an easy solution woud be to have a button only seen by sitters:
Report Inappropriate Sit Description that when clicked provides a drop down list with why it seems inappropriate:
1) Has stated cameras inside the home
2) Expects the sitter to share the home with host’s family member
3) no over night accommodations provided,
Perhaps a dialogue box where one could do a C&P of the inappropriate description.

Okay, I’ll do that, thanks

By now, a good AI can track it for you, but you’ll have to spend the money to adapt the tool to your purposes. But based on how bad the “help” chatbot and your messaging app is, I am not holding my breath…
When it comes to use of modern technology, THS is very far behind.

On one or two occasions, I tried reporting a listing through chat, didn’t work!! I would type: report a listing, and then it would spew out these ‘helpful’ suggestions that has nothing to do with reporting a listing. Then I’d try to paste the link.
No results, please try again! So I just gave up reporting dodgy listings.

@Jenny - If THS is ever looking for a ‘New Listing Checker’ - be sure to let me know!

“Report a listing “ now that would be a really useful function for Frankie to “learn”. :robot:

In the meantime, I forward the listing to support@trustedhousesitters.com with few clicks

  • share - e-mail address - title - send

For the title I write a simple description eg

third party / dangerous pets
