Medical Emergency

Its possible I may have to return to my home due to a medical emergency. What happens to a sitter who has travelled a long way for the sit if on my hospital release I have to return home after surgery. Can they claim for emergency accommodation? I would need family to look after me so them staying not an option. I’m hoping it doesn’t come to that but best to know. Advice welcome

Hi @davy, I hope everything is going well and that this isn’t necessary.

I suggest you communicate with the sitter through the THS chat, keeping everything clear and in writing. Make sure to state that the reason for the cancellation is entirely your responsibility due to your emergency situation.

This way, THS will be informed and can request any necessary information from PP and sitter, who will need to provide documentation in order to find the best solution. This applies in the case the user is a Premium member.

Sure! Here’s a natural English translation of your message:

I ignore the exact terms of the sit, but considering that the minimum fair exchange on the platform is providing accommodation for the sitter, perhaps you could consider offering some help so they suffer the consequences as little as possible. The same would be expected if a sitter had to cancel the sit early due to an emergency.

Can the Sitter Claim Emergency Accommodation Costs?

TrustedHousesitters does not automatically reimburse sitters for emergency accommodation if a sit ends early. However:
• Their Member Support team will mediate in emergencies to help find solutions.
• PP are not legally obligated to cover hotel or alternative stay costs, but offering support is strongly encouraged, especially if the sitter traveled internationally or long distance.

The sitter would be eligible for reimbursement for alternative accommodations only if they have a premium membership. THS will just tell the sitter to look for another sit, that’s the extent of the support. Of course, due to the no overlap policy the sitter is unable to do that until the sit is officially cancelled. So, as soon as you know you’ll be coming back, contact THS so they can adjust the sit end date which will free up the sitter to be able to apply for any sits that may be available in the area.

Emergencies can happen to anyone, it’s a risk we all take. You have a valid reason for needing to end the sit. Anyone using THS should have a backup plan in case of emergency situations.

I hope your surgery goes well and you recover quickly.

All members, sitters and hosts, should have a plan B if something happens. You have a valid reason to cut the sit short. Tell the sitter so they can start on a plan B and/ or look for other sits.

If they don’t get another sit and have a premium membership they might be able to be reimbursed, but that is between the sitter and THS in that case.

Get well soon!

Thankyou for the replies which are supportive. I’m hoping I don’t have to cancel but it’s a waiting game for tests and I need to plan for the worst. Thanks all
