My area has all low applications- any suggestions

So I live in the north east of England.
I have a listing for sitters - 0 applications
I’ve tried messaging- no body wants to come here

So I looked at all the other current applications for sitters in my area - some up now for next year.

They all look fabulous- but every one says low applicants- which could be 0 to ? How many.

Any suggestions anyone ?
I think my listing looks good. So do all the others in my area with a low applicants setting.

Apart from messaging 100 of sitters - do I book a local dog sitter and put this down to a bad experience and waste of money , stating on the reviews - don’t bother unless you live in a popular area such as London, Devon, Cornwall ??

Hmmmm

My thoughts - others may disagree

@annepolet Your listing does look good but to make it stand out maybe put one of the photos of your dogs in the river as the first photo .

Responsibilities - you haven’t provided any information about George and what is involved in taking care of him -
Are your dogs fed only once a day ?
Where do they sleep ?
How long can they be left at home alone for?
Looks one of the photos that they travel well on public transport - if so state this in your listing
Where are they exercised - can they be walked from the doorstep ?
Are they on any medication ?

Sitters are looking for all of this information in the responsibilities section .

Can your home be accessed by public transport or is a car required ? Sitters need to know this . Please it to the home and location section .

It’s great that you have shown this as a family friendly sit in the amenities section. You could add this to your introduction “families welcome “ and add a photo of the additional bedroom that a family will be able to use .

A screenshot of your Wi-Fi speed added to the photos may attract someone who will be working from home .

Your sit looks great. The dogs are our sort of dogs, love long walks. I really enjoy your area and as you say it is a beautiful place. We travel to Highlands of Scotland from south of England a couple of times a year and always have a break around your area.
My personal problem would be the reptile. I’m sorry I don’t know what sort and you don’t name the type. I haven’t a clue how to look after one, feed him/her or care for them. There is no information about this either. Maybe include some info about them. How would you feel about a complete beginner looking after them? I would be very nervous being put in charge. But this is just the way I feel. I’m sure someone out there would jump at the chance.

Don’t give up so easily. You live in a fabulous area and your home looks very nice.

Personally I would prefer less dog photos (3 is ample) and a bit more info in the responsibilities section.

You show a picture of George but no mention of him there.
Where do the dogs sleep? Do they travel well in a car? Can they be left for a few hours after a walk so that the sitter can explore the area? Do they walk well on and off lead and how are they around other dogs and wildlife.

If that sort of information is provided in a listing it saves a sitter ‘applying’ just to ask a question.

I hope that helps.

Messaging sitters rarely works so don’t get too despondent about that. We have declined over 70 offers from HO in just over a year.

West Auckland always has a special place in our hearts as that is where we got our Beagles.
You’re a short hop from historical Barnard Castle, with Bowes Museum.
Less than an hour from the Yorkshire Dales.
Shildon Railway museum is relatively close.
90 minutes gets you to the Lake District.
30 minutes to the heart of the North Pennines

And don’t forget that West Auckland won the first ever ‘World Cup’ in 1909 and again in 1911, some real history there!
Have a good think about your area and mention the attractions, just mentioning South Durham is too generic.
You’ll get out what you put in. Good luck

Hi @annepolet

Your listing looks good but just needs a few tweaks as others have advised.

I would advise, delete the picture with the toilet lid open, It isn’t a good photo nor is it necessary.

Also take a photo of George next to something to give an idea of his size. We cared for a bearded dragon before, he was very easy to look after but your looks much bigger!

Hi Annepolet, we live in the NE too although not as north as you. I tend to advertise really early, for example, we have a sit next April and I advertised in May/June this year. Yes, ridiculously early. It took a few weeks tbh before we had 1 application who we invited to sit after our video chat. We also have one booked for September without such a long notice period but she’s a new sitter who’s trying to build up reviews. Basically, what I’m saying is, when you get an application (and you will) if you think they’re the right fit, accept them and don’t wait for more applicants, they may never arrive. Incidentally, your home looks great although some of the suggestions above are good too.

Thanks for your info - I will amend my listing as per your ideas :blossom::pray:
George is optional, as he can go to lizard care. I thought I had put this along with public transport - but maybe it didn’t save.

Hi
Thanks for your feedback .
George reptile - bearded dragon is optional as can be booked to lizard care - so no problem.
I thought I’d put this - but in retrospect it may be easier to remove him, and book him into the exotic care locally :hibiscus::blossom:

Thank you as a newbie it’s hard to know what to put - I’ll action your suggestions.

Many thanks for your feedback and encouragement. I only joined recently so not enough time this time round .

Hi @annepolet Your listing looks good - gorgeous area and the doggies are cute! I’m glad you’ve now mentioned the Lizard care option as I’m not a reptile fan!!
I agree with others- more info is needed on the dogs- length of walks, eating timings, sleeping place, how long they can be left etc. The more info you provide the faster a sitter can decide whether to apply or not. When I see a listing where I need to ask a lot of questions before I could apply I’ll only bother if the listing really jumps out at me. Otherwise I’ll probably scroll on.
Think like a sitter- what info would you like to know?
I also agree with photo tips- less pics of the dogs and no open toilet pic!!
Good luck! Hope you find great sitters!

I like the «tone» in your listing, it is positive and signals that you would like a sitter to have a good experience. That is important to me, as I think it will reflect a good communication and cooperation with the HO.

If I was reading your listing I would be apprehensive as to whether I would be looking after George and what that would mean practically. I could well see it as a good experience, but some would possibly refrain from applying because they don’t know enough about the tasks involved.

Not to your lisiting specifically, but in general: When HO describe their location, they often do it as a reader should be well aquainted with the area. As I mostly do sits abroad I am always interested in for instance the closest major airport and/ or trainstation - and travel time from there to the home.

Hey there, I took a look for you. Although your listing sounds nice overall, here are some suggestions:

1: Your title is quite subjective & opinionated (better than London? Etc). Using the names of other places & cities may also confuse & mislead readers - remember your title is the first thing a sitter sees. It’s possible a sitter may have never been to or even heard of Cornwall & Devon in their life have no idea what you’re on about. Try ‘Explore all West Auckland has to offer, with 2 Springers!’

2: 41 pictures is quite excessive - nobody’s going to scroll through so many. Choose your top 20 and stick with that. We don’t need to see every angle of every room in your home.

3: Check some of you punctionan & grammar in your listing - there are a few sentences will full stops missing, typos or sentences with no ending. This makes a difference to how clear & fluent your listing sounds.

4: Mention in the home & location section how close you are on foot to public transport & amenities, and give details & descriptions about your home, not just the local area. Where are sitters sleeping? Will they have access to streaming services etc?

5: Responsibilities section - ‘I ain’t gonna’ is very causal and doesn’t sound particularly attractive. Just state that they are early risers. Try listing the responsibilities in simple clear dot points that focus on what a sitter’s tasks are rather than discussing your own personal routine of taking a cuppa back to bed etc - this is what you do but isn’t the lifestyle of everyone else. Mention how long the dogs can be left, how long a walk is, where they sleep, what their behaviours are like during a walk and what their general sociability is like. For example:

My dogs are cuddly and affectionate dogs who love to (nap? Play? cuddle?) during the day.

  • :sparkles: My dogs sleep (where?) and rise early (6:30 - 7am). They need letting out & feeding when they wake.
  • :sparkles: Provide a morning walk in the local fields & forest (for how long & roughly what time?) They can be walked (on leash? Off leash?) and behave (well?
good with other dogs? Don’t pull?) during a walk
  • :sparkles:They are fed a raw frozen food diet, (morning & evening? Or just once a day?) so their food needs defrosting in advance.
-:sparkles: They can be left for (how long?) and can (go on public transport? Be taken in the car with you?) if you wish
  • :sparkles: What about the lizard? What care does he need??

Hope that helps!

West Auckland village green is gorgeous! We’re sitters from Durham and yes we are fully booked, but we sit locally while we visit family in the area as we sit full time, as well as travelling further afield. We’re actually just sitting in North Yorkshire at the moment, and then sitting in Co Durham afterwards, so sitters in the North East do exist, and some of us do sit locally, among other places.

Your profile is good, but it could be more appealing:-

The village green at West Auckland is BEAUTIFUL, STUNNING, GORGEOUS, so personally I would put an image of it (with sunshine!), also mention the types of shops/pubs/cafes nearby. Are those within walking distance, if not, how far in miles? Depending on exactly where you are, you could also mention the retail park and how far it is, mention McD’s, KFC to widen your appeal further, and people can then presume there are good amount of shops within close proximity, without you having to keep saying it.

Also, your main photo is the one showing the countryside with leaf-bare winter trees. So personally I’d pop a one of the village green as your main photo, which is more appealing to a larger number of sitters… because everyone loves a quaint English village green with stone houses and pubs, but not everyone loves our winter countryside. Maybe pop the dogs on the village green photo if you can catch a great shot, because the houses are very pretty on that part. Get flowers in the shot if you can, your main photo is THE most important one.

Personally I wouldn’t refer to London, Devon, or Cornwall in your title, if someone is local, they’ll think they’ve clicked on it by mistake at first glance (I just did). As you’re struggling, try changing your location from West Auckland to Durham and see if that helps, but make sure you say you are in the beautiful village of West Auckland in Co Durham in your profile. But only if you are struggling. It will change your map location, so just see how it goes. Change it to Durham, NOT Co Durham, as the map doesn’t recognise counties quite as easily as it does place names.

Also, change the word ‘mere’, make it a more simple word, not everyone will understand it, there’s loads of nationalities on here, also it’s not a word a younger person would necessarily use/know.

You’ve included a lot of images which is great, but maybe swap the odd more remote one for a sunny Durham Cathedral showing the river/bridge etc, and Raby Castle. Sorry but you’ve got 3 shots of Bishop Auckland castle and all 3 are on a glum and dreary day, but Raby is much prettier from a distance to a visitor and a similar distance away. But make sure the images are sunny and appealing, you only need ONE shot per place, not 3, make it THE best shot possible, there’s loads of good ones online you can use. Same for your High Force image, use a better shot, use a perfect shot from off the internet, like one of it in springtime.

Don’t take offence at any of this, your profile is really lovely, you just need to tweak the photos a little. Just make sure sitters can quickly glance to see you have beautiful countryside, quaint village, and big shops close by.

Be careful of using online photos and check for copyrights. Look for Creative Commons and such (you can do searches for photos with filters for copyrights). I know that there are also catfish-businesses that tag their photos so they are more prone to appear in search, and afterwards they will mail you a warning and a big bill.
