No fan provided during hottest period of the year

I’m in the UK on a sit, and it’s been the hottest period of the year, at 33 degrees on some days.

The HO hasn’t provided a fan or mentioned one. Usually it’s a cold country so I guess we don’t think much about cooling apparatus. But what does THS say about this? Is this something a HO is meant to provide in such temperatures?

Not sure what you would expect THS to do about this considering it’s not mentioned in the listing. You can buy cheap table fans from discount stores if it’s a huge issue for you.

I’ll rephrase - Does THS say anywhere that a HO is supposed to provide adequate heating / cooling to align with the weather during a sit.

Doubtful that THS requires a fan or such, but in your place I’d see about buying one. They aren’t expensive.

If you don’t have easy transportation, you might even check whether you could get one same-day delivered. (I don’t know whether you can do that there — in the U.S., I’d get one via DoorDash, because it delivers from hardware stores and such, as well as from supermarkets and restaurants. While sitting in the U.K., I’ve ordered only liquor, groceries and meals.)

The combo of a mister bottle and a fan is such a relief on hot days if you don’t have air conditioning or central air.

That would be unenjoyable for sure.
Have you asked the HO about a fan as they may have one stashed away somewhere OR they might arrange a purchase or a loaner. Fingers crossed for you. Good suggestions from the other forum members

I live in the UK and am carrying out a sitting in one of the hottest areas in England.
I would never expect to be provided with a fan.
I am not aware of any guidance from THS to deal with rare heatwaves in the UK.
Just follow any advice on Google to keep house cool and buy a fan if required.

The first thing to do is ask the homeowner if they have a fan and tell them it is quite hot. It could be stored anywhere. I’m sure they don’t want their pets or you to be that uncomfortable. If they say, we do somewhere but can’t remember where, they can always order one and have it delivered to you overnight.

TH does say to provide adequate accommodations but I doubt at this point there is much they can do. It was really up to you to ask if they have air conditioning or some type of cooling system knowing it would be so hot. I’m sure the homeowners will take care of the problem so just communicate with them.

Short answer: No. THS doesn’t mention it anywhere.

Imagine THS would set up a list with requirements for a house owner to have in their home.

What should be in it? Undoable, I think.

Every country has his own specific needs.
Every culture has his own specific needs/ expectations.
Every person has his own specific needs/ wishes.

What’s adequate housing for one doesn’t have to be adequate housing for another.

Wish you all the best. Cross fingers for a cooling down.

Thanks all! Have bought a little fan.

Was just curious if this is something HO are meant to provide as it’s the first time I’ve been on a sit during a very hot period and it hasn’t been. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

We’re currently in Switzerland and it’s also very hot. When the heat didn’t let up for a few days, I asked the HO if they might have a fan somewhere stashed away. Unfortunately they didn’t, but they immediately offered that we buy one and they would reimburse us. We’re only here for another 4 days, with 2 days a bit cooler, so I didn’t take them up on it, but yes, some HO’s are reasonable. But you need to ask!

There no guarantee. Some HOs might say there’s air conditioning and when you get there ask you not to use it since electricity is expensive :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Hi RR12345,
I live here in the UK and do not own a fan. I simply open all the doors and windows. It is cooler at night and I simply have all my bedroom windows wide open. Usually there is a bit of a breeze that blows through nicely. I do not actually like fans as noisy. I have stayed in countries that have been warmer, where again just windows open and sleep with onlyu a sheet on me.
It really does not bother me, and if the owner did not mention having a fan in the amenities section, then they will not have one and no need to provide one at all.

As others have said, “adequate” heating/cooling is subjective, so no way to enforce this. As long as a fan wasn’t listed in the profile, there is nothing to enforce.

I’m glad you got a fan and some relief. Did you ask the HOs if they had one stashed somewhere?

As some home owners don’t leave space in the fridge, drawers or hanging space which they are supposed to provide it would be extremely unlikely they would leave a fan….which isn’t on the list of necessities!

They might provide it, having it stashed away or buying one. I wouldn’t expect the host to provide one though, or mark them down if they didn’t. That is because for me they share their home with me. It should have some minimum requirements, clean and safe and such. Apart from that one can’t require AC or a fan if the host don’t use it. 33° is warm, but many countries have higher temps on a regular basis without using such devices.

Keeping it cool inside under such circumstances, I take into consideration on what side of the house there’s shade, and I open windows only on the shade side.

On the sunny side it could help to have closed windows and use the curtains. I know from my student days that it can be very effective to hang up aluminium foil on the window, which will reflect the heat. That will ofc also make it dark inside. This can look both ugly and suspicious from the outside. One might consider with neighbors and such to mention why it is done (to neighbors or to host). «It has been very warm, so I tried a tip to put foil in the window to reflect heat. I think it works, but I guess it is not so pretty».

Cold iced water in a hot water bottle works well as does hanging a wet towel or sheet in a window to cool the breeze. So many tips for cooling without using a fan which eats power.

Hi @RR12345

As others have mentioned, we don’t have specific guidance around providing cooling apparatus in the UK.

As someone born and raised in the UK, I do sympathise, as I’ve heard from others that the heat in the UK is a lot more humid than in other countries, and it can be uncomfortable!

If it happens again, it’s definitely work asking the HO if they have a fan, but I also agree with @visit about opening windows and doors (especially if there is a bit of a breeze!), and with @Garfield about keeping curtains closed. Bonus points to @BonnyinBrighton’s suggestion too.

I’m glad you were able to get yourself a fan, and I hope that the heat becomes more manageable.
