I’ve just seen a new sit listed and I can’t help but wonder if it’s within THS guidelines . The sitter will stay in a completely self contained apartment and care for a dog that cannot be left alone at all while the owner is at work during the day .
I would inform THS. Either they are bad at communication or they don’t want to pay for a doggie sitter. Is this daily? You go 9 to 5 and then leave? They are on the wrong platform.
That is not a “normal” sit but I could understand the appeal.
If the sitter is happy about the separate living quarters and only has to care for the dog during certain hours, that is easier than taking care of a dog 24/7.
It really depends on the bigger picture and the exact specs of the separate apartment.
The main problem with day sit requests would typically be that the sitter is not getting what they are supposed to get in exchange, which is free accommodation . Doubtful anyone would really be interested in providing that sort of service free of charge.
This arrangement is not very typical but it could be appealing to a lot of people since they are still getting their own space.
I think for the most part, sitters and hosts should be able to work things out between themselves. So long as hosts are upfront, and the particulars of the arrangement are okay with the sitter, I don’t see the problem .
It wouldn’t be a sit for me BUT If self contained accommodation is provided for the sitter (including staying overnight ) then it meets the requirements for a THS sit.
THS allows listings with pets that can never be left alone . In this case the sitter is free to do their own thing in the evenings and overnight .
It won’t suit the majority of sitters but they only need to find one sitter for who this arrangement is mutually beneficial .
There are a LOT of sitters in my city (and other HCOL areas) that are using THS in lieu of paying rent. I can see how this would appeal to some. I don’t think it’s in the spirit of THS, but probably gets in on a technicality, and if both parties are happy, why not I guess.
If the complete separate apartment is provided by the pet owners, this sit could be very appealing for some of the sitters we’ve had. Sitter gets free accommodation, cares for pets during the day, has no housekeeping chores and evenings entirely to themselves. It’s an unusual arrangement but seems entirely within the THS wheelhouse so long as there’s no responsibilities creep over the sit begins .
Just have to pull you up on this. As sitters we don’t have housekeeping chores. We just leave the home as clean as we found it. Hopefully that’s what you meant…
I’ve seen such a sit (I think it was southern Europe). I don’t think it is within the community spirit, as it would be more of an “employee/ hired help” vibe, at least for me.
It’s a bit different but a similar ‘not in the spirit’ when I see the frequent FIFO listings (fly in fly out workers do maybe 2 weeks away 2 weeks at home eg oil rig workers or mining in Australia). Many of these are seeking the same sitter to do all their future listings after the 1st advertised set of dates. I can’t see how that would work at all…..
Sitting regularly for FIFO listing in a city with high rents could work for a local student in small digs who wants more space from time to time or similar .
Would definitely suit me to do a sit like this. Have the self contained accommodation, doggy love during the day and my own time and space at night. Sounds great to me
As others have said this isn’t really in violation of T&Cs if the sitter is provided with 24/7 accommodation but it definitely pushes the boundaries to grey area. That being said….can definitely see how this would work for lots of people.
This isn’t in the "normal” spirit of a TH, but I wouldn’t say that it’s not in the spirit of TH in that it’s still a mutually beneficial arrangement in which both parties’ needs could be reasonably met.
