Question from new pet sitters

Hi everybody!

We are an enthusiastic, fun, honest en Dutch family from the Netherlands and have plans to travel for a year ( or longer) at September, 25.

We have just registered at this website and love to combine animals and traveling the world.

We are thinking about Mexico, Costa Rica, maybe other country’s, but want to surprise ourselves.

Is it also possible to get soms opportunities for pet sitting with our family?
What are your experiences with this? Are there more families our there who travel and do house/pet sitting together? I’d love to connect and hear your stories.
Thank you all for your responses!

Greetings Nicole, Kai end Demi.

Welcome to THS! What a blast you are going to have!

Having lived in California and Oregon my entire life, we have been to various parts of Mexico dozens of times, and to Costa Rica once.

I would study the weather carefully in the areas you plan to visit. Costa Rica is generally very hot (better up in the mountains). Be sure you are able to use air conditioning. Mexico is really nice during winter (December through March), but the weather is stifling (hot, humid, thunderstorms) from June through October.

Hello

Welcome to THS and it sounds like you are setting up for a fun adventure. Just a couple of things to keep in mind.

THS has a filter for ‘family friendly’ sits so you can know right away if someone is open to hosting children. Though even in this sub category of hosts, they may have their own preferences as far as the number and age of the children. As for applying for sits without this filter, and that don’t specifically mention this issue, I am not sure if that is something sitters with families do regularly, and if so, find success.

Generally speaking, sitting with children can limit opportunities whether it is because people are not comfortable having them in the home for a variety of reasons or don’t have the space to host families.

There are people that do it successfully so it is certainly possible.

As for where to go, it is important to keep in mind that sits in certain regions are not as common. Places like Mexico and Central America aren’t super common but they aren’t necessarily super rare either. Costa Rica and Panama have the most opportunities as far as Central America goes–lots of people retire there, particularly Americans. South American sits are pretty rare.

One thing to consider when planning is how reliant you are on housesitting for your accommodation needs.

If for example, you wanted to travel to that region for a whole year and you just lined up one or two sits to start before heading over, hoping to fill your calendar along the way, that may be difficult and you could have lots of gaps, perhaps longer ones, in your schedule.

This is especially true if traveling with a family because fewer opportunities will probably be available to you from the outset.

But if you were traveling somewhere like the UK, you could easily do something like that since there are so many sits on a regular basis.

I have done a few sits in Panama and Costa Rica and we really like it there. We were there last year–all sits in the mountains and the weather was great. Didn’t need AC in either place. This was from around mid March to through early August. If you go to these places in the rainy season, especially the last couple of months of it, it can rain quite heavily, especially in certain areas. So be sure to do your research about that to have a sense of what you may encounter in a given area.

Another thing to consider for this region is many people, especially in Costa Rica, live in areas where a car is necessary–usually a 4 wheel drive–and it seemed like many hosts did not offer up one to use, meaning you would need to rent your own.

There were many sits I passed on applying to there because of this–lots of places looked lovely but I didn’t want to go badly enough to take on such an expense. Though you will find people that do offer their cars to sitters–our hosts in Panama did as well as one of our hosts in CR.

As far as Europe goes, the Netherlands is probably one of the more popular countries for listings. If it is possible, you might consider doing some sits there to build up your reviews–perhaps you can find some shorter ones near your home for example. This could increase your chances of being accepted for sits in other countries, especially ones that can be more ‘competitive’ due to their popularity.

@HappyPawsFamily, welcome to THS and THS Forum. Exciting!

We (retired-ish couple) completed almost 50 housesits in many countries. Nuts.

Above sentence caught our attention. Two related thoughts. First, THS housesit listings are concentrated in US, UK, Canada and Australasia. There are housesits in Europe, Central/South America, and elsewhere but fewer in number. Second, strongly encourage that you actively experiment with the “Saved Search” function - for housesitters that are opportunistic, with openness in timing and geography, then it can present plentiful opportunities to “surprise ourselves”.

Hi there. We petsit as a family and have had many adventures with THS. Our first 3 sits confirmed this year are on three different continents. It feels odd just thinking about that. Feel free to post questions on this forum as there are many experienced folks on this forum who are happy to assist. Good luck!

Hi Nicole, Kai and Demi @HappyPawsFamily and welcome to the forum. Where in the Netherlands are you from? My son’s football team have a partnership with a club just outside Rotterdam and they visit each other every year.

I have been housesitting with my 2 boys since 2019. Mostly just on weekends and during school holidays. We used to only apply to sits with the “Family Friendly” filter, but now that my sons are 16 and 14 and taller than me, I not longer use it because they definitely no longer fit in child size beds.

I include a lot of information about my children in my profile such as their interests and hobbies. I also have lots of photos of them with pets. If pet parents think you have something in common - shared interests, similar work, they are more likely to identify with you and choose you. We once had a response to an application that said “Your family sounds just like ours!”

To start with, we applied to sits with several pets, where more pairs of hands would be helpful, and to families with children similar of similar ages. While we still sit for a lot of families, we have also sat for homeowners of all ages, including those without children. We also don’t always sit for multiple pets.

If you click on my name you can have a look at my profile. I do really need to update some of the photos with more recent ones, but i will have to leave at least one of our friends dog who we used to look after for many years. When she passed away we joined THS so that we could continue to care for pets.

Sometimes it’s nice to be surprised and go somewhere you hadn’t thought of because you see a housesit there or are invited!

Good luck! I luck forward to hearing that you have secured your first sit!
