I thought about it….
Funny, I was in a motel recently, looking at the extra roll, thinking about taking it — because of this sit. And I knocked myself back to reality.

I think you solved the mystery. Collecting partial rolls of tp (from hotels or public loos) moves a request from the host to replace tp out of the “odd” realm to entirely reasonable. At least, reasonable from the perspective of the host’s odd reality. I takes all kinds and you hooked a seriously odd one here.
But I would absolutely not indulge their reality and would be completely fine vigorously defending myself from a blistering review by a host protesting my cavalier attitude toward partial rolls of tp. ![]()
Wait did we do the same sit recenlty in Dubai? haha. The HO described herself as “minimal” and “eco”, which was not made clear until I got there. I don’t mean to hate on the eco thing at all, but I need more than one dingey old towel and water to properly clean things? I need soap that actually soaps….scrubs that actually scrub. Fresh towels and paper towels and tissues too! These shouldn’t be considered extravagant. Unfortunately “eco” can often be a cover for some less than hygienic situations. (This same HO had a mildewy upstairs bedroom but was in denial about it.)
I think most sitters require these household and toiletry items for sits, it’s just kind of crazy to be traveling or nomad’ing and expected to buy it all, and like you said, then what do you do with them at the end?
I have to wonder about sits where the homeowner can’t even cover basic toiletries for the sitter. To me it’s become a learned red flag of someone who is not treating sitters like welcome houseguests but as renters or staff. Or who just can’t afford to keep their home running. And while I want to be understanding about that, I just don’t think it bodes well for the invited sitter in the end. This is something that’s been echoed in the forums as a sign of an uncomfortable experience.
Of course I prefer homes where those things are available in abundance. I’ve also learned to keep sits short, 1-2 weeks max.
this was a 4 night sit. I just did it to be on the central coast in California.
Agreed! I recently sat for a lovely young couple who used rags instead of paper towels, homemade detergents, etc, which I appreciated. But they were realistic about their expectations for the sitter and had a supply of standard items available if I preferred to use them. I thought their approach was very thoughtful.
