Thanks! I love crime stories.
Love Peter May crime series and also Ann Cleeves âShetlandâ series.
I have come across The palace of illusions by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruniâs and sounds interesting but I wonder if it will be difficult to understand for someone who is not familiar with Mahabharata or Indian mythology.
Just finished, The Lion Women Of Tehran. What an incredible read. The author Marjan Kamali has now become one of my favorites. It takes place from the early 1950âs to 2022.
Two 7 year old girls who meet at school in Tehran and their fascinating and unpredictable lives throughout the years as they go separate ways but always remain best friends in their hearts. It is historical fiction and a book you wonât want to put down. It was a read for my book club and canât wait till we meet next week to discuss. Already cheated with discussing the book with a close friend who is in the book club as well. Most of us in the book club were born in the 50âs in the era the book starts. Since it is historical fiction, we all remember some of the major events and headlines that made it to the US and around the world.
Thanks. That is really helpful. I think it is also a perfect moment to learn something more about Iran.
Love this. I also try to read authors from the country/city I am visiting. I have not seen these areas included yet so here are some that I thought were wonderful (they are available on the Libby app for those of you who get books from US libraries) :
Bosnia-Herzogovina
How the Soldier Repairs the Gramophone by SaĹĄa StaniĹĄiÄ
Safe Area Goradze by Joe Sacco (graphic novel)
Germany (East)
The Standardization of Demoralization Procedures by Jennifer Hofmann

The Manzoni Family by Natalia Ginzburg ( or anything by her)
I cannot agree with you about âThe Salt Pathâ. I thought it was badly written and then it turned out she was a thief and a liar.
The author of the SALT PATH is profiting from her lies, and fake âmemoirâ. I read it and immediately knew something was âoffâ. The podcast Tortoise Investigates (The Observer) has done a brilliant 6 episode investigation of the real story of all the people who were harmed by the author, to date sheâs offered no compensationâŚ. despite earning millions from this fake book.
Thanks for the info about the podcast. Iâll check it out
I read the Salt Path years ago, and just caught up on the controversy on the Salt Path. Thanks , removed from recommendations.
Thanks for the recommendations, including The Salt Path. This has given me the opportunity to learn about the book and the controversy. I had never heard of the book but reading about it and the controversy, I think itâs pretty common to have some kind of controversy in auto fiction and similar genres. It seems this case is especially controversial because it all started with a theft.
This reminds me of a book which was meant to be published in Spain about a year ago, Hatred It was about the murders of two kids by their own father as a means to hurt their mother. The murderer, now in prison, had never admitted his crimes but it seems he did to the author of the book. The publishers got sued and the book was never released. Although some people said this limited freedom of speech, most people agreed it would be disgusting to allow this man to inflict further pain on his ex wife, get more notoriety and even make money.
In the U.S., thereâs whatâs known as âSon of Samâ law, to keep criminals from profiting from crimes while claiming free speech. If there are profits, they can be taken to (re)pay victims.
I donât think we have anything specific on that. In fact, in this case it were the publishers who voluntarily cancelled the contract with the writer after all the controversy. The book was printed and ready to be distributed and the ex wife, who learnt about it on the media, asked for the distribution to be stopped until a judge decided on the matter. The distribution was not suspended by the judge but public opinion was so much against it that the publishers backed away. That was a year ago, it seems the author has not been able to find a new publisher.
