THS Book Club: Choose our next book(s)

Hello All,

I decided to start a new topic to choose our next book — or two or three. Here is the latest list, plus three suggested before: Flashlight and The Rest of Our Lives that were both shortlisted for the 2025 Booker Prize, and Anne Tyler’s A Spool of Thread. We’re also open to “write-ins” if anyone wants to add a title not included here.

Please take a look at these and post three (or more) titles you’d be interested in reading.
Thanks :sunflower:

Hi Maeve,

I think my top 3 choices would be The Housemaid, The God of Small Things and Flashlight

I wouldn’t mind reading My Friends or The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny either.

Thanks for putting this list together

What a great list of books!

The titles that sound interesting to me are The Savage, Noble Death of Babs Dionne, Sonia and Sunny and Winter’s Bone. It could be that too many in the group saw the movie version of Winter’s Bone, though? I suspect that the book is even better!

I’m anxious for a good read! Cheers! Laura

Nice to see your preferences @Debbie and @Lbholc . Yes, I’ve also seen the movie version of Winter’s Bone but would be open to reading the book based on @MerryPuppins recommendation.

I’d like to hear from some others so am tagging a few more people here: @Cuttlefish @Newpetlover @Southernsitter @Landbiscuit @MaggieUU @hitchedandhiking @susiesav @Makelikeanapeman @DianeS Feel free to add your own suggestions.

Hello :waving_hand:t3: sorry I’ve been so rubbish!! Have read The Housemaid recently and God of Small Things ages ago. Both get my vote for different reasons. The Rest of our Lives and The Loneliness of Sonia and Sonny both jump out of the rest to me but honestly, the whole list looks good. Thanks as always @Maeve - will try and join this month! #newyearsresolution

Thanks @Newpetlover ! How about a third choice? Or one we haven’t yet mentioned? :books:

Hi Maeve,

My three would be;

The loneliness of Sonia and Sunny, Kiran Desai

Buckeye, Patrick Ryan

My friends, Fredrik Backman

Just scanning some reviews of the titles… several are set in Maine. What is it about Maine! The Olive Kitteridge was also sitting in Maine.

looking forward to another good read

All,

I’m adding a few more that should have been in the original list. I’d be happy to read any of them.

Sort of in order, I’d be most interested in:

  • The Rest of Our Lives
  • Savage Noble Death[…]
  • Flowers for Algernon
  • Winter’s Bone
  • Flashlight

Thanks for putting this together!

These are the :books: that got the most interest:

The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny
The Housemaid
The Rest of Our Lives
Flashlight

I propose we go with The Rest of Our Lives, as it should be a quick read — it’s 240 pages — and we’ll choose from the others when we meet for the book to follow that.

Are you available to meet on one or more of these days (at the usual time: 10AM PST; 11AM MST; 12PM CST; 1PM EST; 6PM GMT; 7PM CET; 8PM EET)?

Wednesday, 25 February
Friday, 27 February
Wednesday, 11 March

If younger son’s football training stays at the same time I could probably do any of these days.

Hi Maeve,

Once again thank you for organising and messaging about the book selections. For some reason I didn’t get any notifications from this thread, so I’ve just caught up on all the messages. I’m more than happy with “The Rest Of Our Lives”, I will get reading ASAP!
Of these dates, I can do 25th Feb or 11th March.

Thank you,
Jess

Great, Jess. It’ll be lovely to see you.

We decided to meet on Wednesday the 11th of March to discuss the book. See this thread.
