Sitter wants to charge us

Report them.

There’s nothing wrong with finding paid sitters elsewhere but that is not what this platform is for and their actions go against T&Cs.

@bakindoki
Did you see this addition information?

It’s not really about mutual exchange anymore sadly. Since charging sitters £9 who is going to do a 2-3 night sit?

I hadn’t but if it’s a search for a local sitter in the app, that still seems odd to me.

if that is the case, I still think it’s a blurry line. I would not share details of my service in the app and at that point. For me, it would be a question of moving off platform or simply saying I only do paid local sits so may not be the best fit and let the HO decide from there what they want to do.

If a sitter can’t be found on platform, an alternative will ultimately have to find an alternative but yea, I would not feel comfortable offering paid services in app due to T&Cs even if it’s something I do off platform.

Indeed. None of us really know the exact wording or conditions in the sitter’s reply, whether they’d have taken it off-app or not, etc. — but to me it feels like splitting hairs at this point.

The basic facts are:
— the OP/host, who is looking for a last-minute sitter, sent an unsolicited on-platform invite to a local member asking if they could cover.

— The sitter responded with their credentials and their nightly paid rate (exact wording unknown; they may not have even agreed to do the dates.)

— The host feels taken advantage of and wants to know if they should report them.

My take is that the sitter shouldn’t be called out or penalized by THS for what is an especially blurry line. The idea of someone asking them a favor, unsolicited, and then reporting them under those circumstances leaves a rather bad taste in my mouth, tbh.

Hopefully the OP held off, and has now had time to reconsider after seeing the input from other members once the details were made clearer. :crossed_fingers:

My thoughts exactly.

I’ve seen where sitters begin to cross the line, but agree we don’t have enough information here. And some of us (me included) were too quick to judge already without all the facts.

Here are two experiences I had: (1) A local sitter took my last minute sit after someone cancelled. She came to pick up the keys and then called me hours later to tell me my litter made her wheeze so she could only do drop ins for pay “to help me out.” I got my keys back and found another sitter. I didn’t report her but probably should have as months later it looked like she took another sit and had a history of double booked sits (back when you could do that) plus a really bad review I hadn’t spotted where she got money for “extra plants” and that didn’t go well (2) I noticed a local sitter with a great profile who had favorited me, so I contacted her with a “fake” one day sit just to get an idea if we’d be well matched. She told me straight out she charges for “local” sits. I found it odd that she’d favor my sit but just let her know in that case it didn’t interest me because come to that I’d “hire” a neighbor or exchange services with one. Months later she applied to one of my sits. I just declined reminding her why. I think “favoring” my sit and taking an application slot crossed a line.

Let’s face it. I think it is becoming harder and harder to find sitters. We paid a local housesitter for our last sit I did add it on last minute sits but got no responses. The paid housesitter,£552 for 8 days, managed to break the kettle and did not read my welcome guide regarding feeding. She did walk the dogs (as neighbours reported) so at least that was something. She had a number of other jobs, looking after horses and dog walking so was away from the house for periods. We have another sit advertised in April but had no applications. We did get an application on UKhousesitters website she charged £20 a night which was acceptable, we had a good video call and both parties confirmed the sit but 2 days later she cancelled the sit due to “unforeseen circumstances”, whatever that was …

I always used a dog walker that I knew was good. Someone I would see in the dog runs regularly, had a home with a backyard. I paid a lot for dog sitting, we traveled a lot, but you want your pet happy.

If you wanted to go somewhere for just a weekend or a couple of days, because you intended to go there anyway, it’s a good deal vs. hotel/airbnb, but otherwise, yeah – not much incentive to do short sits to increase your reviews. Didn’t THS think of this…? :thinking: :laughing:

@ABGM it’s only a good deal if the pet care is reasonable.

@Cathie you mean the amount of responsibilities? Yes, true. I typically only sit cats and don’t pick sits that need you to be there all day, so I was thinking of just “would I do it” … :woman_shrugging:

I was looking at a cat sit while I was looking for a permanent place in Toronto. They needed to be fed 4/5 times a day. How would you go and do anything?

@Huronbase yep, I feel like there are a lot of unrealistic owners out there. What is in it for the sitter?

A piece of cake. On my latest cat sit, the cats needed to be fed 15-17 times a day :sweat_smile:

@august #havingalend :wink:

For us its the principal, changing the goalposts when you have entered a mutual respected contract/membership on auto renewal is not ok, we have just finished our last sit, 30plus 5 star sits, auto renewal in a couple of weeks has been cancelled, I don’t take kindly to obvious attempts to force people into premium member ship arrangements

Except the booking fee has rather blurred the lines in terms of “mutual exchange” with THS semi-endorsing payment (albeit solely to THS). A little twisted but it’s the new dystopian reality. To respond to the original post - swipe left and find someone else

If you want to pay, that’s a whole other thing but sitters are not supposed to charge.

@Katie I’m late to this conversation but I am on Team _____ If that sitter is doing paid sits already in her “regular life” then she should simply say to the HO that she’s only doing paid sits for those local to her. THS is not a marketing platform for paid sitters, nor a platform for paid sitters to use to acquire paid sits. There’s a Facebook group for UK sitters they can and should use.
