Smell of cigarettes or pot

Do you ask hosts if they smoke at home and whether the home and the room where you’d sleep smell of cigarette or pot smoke?

Well, from now on I will…

Yes, in my application I request confirmation that they have a non-smoking home.

Yes, in the first part of our sitters profile we state that we’re happy to sit in “non-smoking homes" and we ask during the video chat, too.

Yes, I say in my application that I will only sit in a house where the owners are either non-smokers or don’t smoke inside the house. Obviously sometimes it’s not necessary to state that if their listing says they will only consider non-smokers.

It’s stated very clearly in my Profile that we ONLY sit in non-smoking homes.

In our profile we say “We are both non smokers”, to put off any smoking households from considering us, and its worked 100% of the time, without us having to say anything else.

We include it in our profile as a deal breaker, stating we will only sit in non-smoking homes.

Most of the sits i apply for state that theyre a non smoking household, and it tends to come up when we have video chats. I would never sit for a smoker because i am incredibly sensitive to smells, and also i have a vulnerable child.

We did do one sit which there was what i thought was the smell of cigs or weed, turns out it was her incense burner- thats how sensitive i am! Luckily, we figured it out fast and she was fine with me putting it outside for yhe duration of the sit.

You think hosts make a note of that? I’ll make sure to add it to my profile…

My sitter profile and applications mention that I don’t smoke.

I try to anticipate what hosts will typically want to know, so they don’t need to ask.

I grew up with a chain smoker, so the smell of smoke in homes doesn’t bother me.

I don’t ask, as it would not bother me. I don’t smoke, and as I think it is the standard nowadays, I only mention it to the host if they ask in their profile or directly. I think it is a good question to add when it bothers.

I am combined and always make sure the rules are clear in my home. It’s also in my sitter profile that we can’t tolerate the smell of smoke, but I just realized two things: I don’t always explicitly ask when I chat with a homeowner. It isn’t something sitters can filter for and it’s not mentioned on the listing unless the host puts it there.

Thank you, for bringing this up. Sorry for what you are going through.

Yes I do. It’s also in my profile that I’m a non-smoker who will only consider sitting in homes where owners don’t allow smoking inside at all. I say it’s a health issue for me (which it is).

And it’s not just about whether the ‘smell’ bothers you or not. The presence of thirdhand smoke (especially with habitual smokers) can result in residual nicotine and other toxic chemicals that settle on surfaces and can be re-emitted into the air over time.

It’s a hard no from me.

I request at the very top of my profile page not to be invited if there are smokers or room fragrance products in the house as I am allergic to both.

In my listing I state we are a non smoking home and do not want smoking in the home or even the backyard (we back up to natural open space and an errand cigarette can be devastating in a dry year).

I suggest if it isn’t in the listing you ask upfront in your application - does anyone currently or previously smoke(d)?
