Social media share?

Hi -

I’m new to THS and I have a few sits lined up, but no THS reviews yet. I do have several references provided outside of THS.

My Instagram account is public and I wondered about sharing it when I apply for a sit. By sharing it, I would hope the owner would learn more about me (it is mostly wildlife and nature photography I have taken in the last year with my new hobby). I think it demonstrates my love for animals and nature etc., and may help with trust? I have no interest in gathering followers, getting “likes”, and I don’t sell anything, so my only motive would be to offer an additional look into my life. I have very few followers and there is nothing much going on with it.

Owners - would you like to receive such a link, or would it come off as self-promotion or just weird?

Thanks!

We’re sitters, and we gave owners our LinkedIn profile to begin with to help give assurance. I presume it worked, because we ended up sitting full time within 3 months of starting, and we had zero references from friends and family on our profile.

Personally, I think as long as you say why you are doing giving them the links rather than the owner feeling like they need to commit to befriending you on social media, then it can’t do any harm at all.

The way you’ve worded it on here is brilliant, you’ve put across your personality really well, so I don’t think you’ll have any problem in wording it perfectly.

As soon as we had about 3 reviews it changed everything, as our acceptance rate hugely increased then, so it won’t take long considering you’ve already got sits lined up.

I have my Facebook link on my profile as well as a link to my blog/business site.

I can only recall one host ever mentioning anything about these links on pre-confirmation chats ,or subsequent conversations–and only a few have ever friend requested me–so not sure how many people actually look at them, or if they have had any impact on their decision to choose us.

We are long-time sitters and have loads of reviews so I don’t think it would be necessary to provide anything beyond the profile at this point but figure it can’t hurt to have it there.

The content you describe sounds pretty innocuous, and as a new sitter especially, it probably can’t hurt for hosts to get more of a sense of who you are.

Try it out and see what happens.

Tangentially, the holidays are coming up and there usually are plenty of sits, unless you’re set on the most popular locations. Holiday season is relatively easy for even newbies to land sits.

As a host I would like to see this kind of information volunteered. It does help see you as a whole person, and build trust. I would go ahead and just note you’re providing the link so they can get to know you and your hobbies and interests a bit more.

You may want to consider if you are comfortable if they decide to follow you. If you aren’t, you may want to set up a LinkedIn profile (or a separate Instagram profile) with some of your photos their, and make that a place to share some pet sitting photos in the future (with the host permission of course). Up to you, of course.

I actually have a sit over the Thanksgiving (US) and another over the Christmas holiday.

I’d thought maybe I could put the IG link in where it offers a place of the LinkedIn link, but no!

Thank you!

You could just include it in your application, which is the first thing that hosts see, if you apply.

I wonder if there is also a consideration in putting one’s life out there for people to see and monitor. Personally, I would be worried that sharing an Instagram account while sitting for a host could create concerns. For example, going out to lunch and posting a meal, or posting from a hike, might make a host wonder: How long has the sitter been away? Was the pet fed that morning? Is the sitter too far away to return in time to give the dog its medication?
To me, it provides peace of mind to both parties and avoid sharing social media when house-sitting. Even when taking care of someone’s home, there is concern that the homeowner might monitor my activities. I personally would not like to feel monitored while traveling. This is not meant disrespectfully toward anyone who believes that doing the right thing should eliminate concerns; however, perception is important when meeting people.

And I hope this doesn’t spark into anything. I just genuinely don’t feel comfortable with it, but I understand why it might be nice to have to display your character. If you build a strong profile with quality photos, strong bios, and I think most importantly, strong messages as an applicant. Then that should do the trick plus your references.

For example: If you apply for a listing and you send the host a message that reads, “Hi I’m interested in sitting for your house. Please let me know.” That’s not a very strong application.

What I would do is look at the listing, look at the dates, look at the host, the photos, the responsibilities, the location, read about the pets, and then just craft your message in a way that reads: “Hey I’ve looked over your listing properly.”

Then write something along the lines of:

"Hi Stephen,

I saw your listing for November 10 to November 30. I think I’d be a great fit because your two dogs look like such gems. Based off the reviews I can tell that they have a lot of energy. I’m really big into nature. If your dogs are capable of going on walks, I’d like to take them out for a stroll while I photograph wildlife and nature (or whatever it is that you’re into doing) if you haven’t already made your decision, I’d love to apply and maybe we can meet via video call or in person to see if we’re a good fit.”

To me that just seems more engaged, more active and I’ve done 38 sits at this 20 of which have been verified reviews through TrustedHousesitters. And I am often chosen over other sitters that had applied before me because I present myself as an engaged individual and it seems like you care about that too so I hope that this makes sense and a good luck with your adventures !

I realize that.

I never put our link in the linkedin part because there’s two of us, so i put ours in our application instead, and also i think by doing so, you are revealing more to that specific owner, so the owners may feel naturally closer to you by including it in your application because you haven’t broadcast it to everyone, just them.

If you’re new with no reviews, I think the outside references would do you more good. Can you add any more? I think if I was reviewing applications I’d rather read what others have to say about you than scroll through a bunch of pictures on IG, which it seems “everyone” (except me?) does. I have a hobby-photography Flickr, but I wouldn’t put it in an application and profile because I don’t think it’s relevant to the sit. I think mentioning that one enjoys photography is enough (and then as a host if we met and had time to chat, I’d enjoy talking about it).
Just my 2 cents though – I don’t think it does any harm, so do it if it feels important to you.
Good luck, hope you get some good sits and have fun
