THS Marketing and Advertising

Where is the THS marketing and advertising, I’ve never seen any? Is it all in the US, on TV in newspapers, magazines?

Maybe you have an adblocker running. I do as well but it doesn’t stop all the ads. Lots of THS adverts come up in my MSN feed as well as FB and other social media sites such as internet discussion forums.

Online ads.

If you have good digital hygiene, you shouldn’t see many if any?

Never see one, ever, anywhere. I don’t have any news feeds in my preferred web browser and I use Fluff Busing Purity to block all the crap on FB. I don’t use Instagram, TikTok, X or any social media.

The ones I’ve seen have been on social — it’s the best place for paid acquisition, as such ads are called generically, because the various platforms let advertisers choose whom they advertise to, by income levels, geography, age ranges, home ownership, etc. That way, companies’ advertising dollars tend to get more bang for the buck and they can better track how much return they get on their spend.

That’s probably why, I use a VPN, ad blockers, browser extensions for FB, endpoint protection, a password manager and I keep clear of dodgy sites and links.

Thanks for the explanation. If I ever see a THS ad then there’s been a failure in my counter measures.

I stopped seeing THS ads, because once you block an advertiser, as various social platforms allow users to do, you don’t typically see their ads going forward.

They let you do that so advertisers get better bang for their buck and are more likely to spend on their particular platform.

The only ads I’m aware of seeing online are embedded in the digital version of The Times. I use the BBC for most of my news as well as a few other sources where I can block or opt out of the ads. I’m blissfully unaware of so much of the crap that’s online and pushed on us.

I’m selective on blocking, because websites often get revenue from ads. If more and more people block and that further reduces revenue, then the outlets will cut back on what they produce or go out of business, which is detrimental if you believe in competing sources of info.

I block as much of the crap and crud as I can. I’ll pay for content where either the ads are unobtrusive, or non-existent e.g. The Times. With the BBC I pay the annual licence fee and it’s completely ad free.

I doubt that many people use ad blockers, the threat to content producers is small to non-existent.

Ha, cry me a river.

I suggest reframing — not crying for anyone, but instead thinking about what’s better for society, considering that greater competition for info is better.

This might not be the best place to discuss what’s better for society.

@anon52083843 oooh I don’t know, that could be an interesting new thread

You’ll get me banned if that thread ever starts.

I’ll start it right away!

There are tons of television ads. I don’t know if they are on broadcast or targetted over streaming services, but I see commercials a lot of THS. The commercials definitely have a Rover vibe. (I also see a lot of Rover adds). I only watch streaming services some with ads (the cheap version) so the ads may be targetted to me.
