Transitioning to paid HouseSitting / Pet care

Yes particularly last minute ones

Same
I don’t apply to anything I can have time to explore

It depends on the type of sit if I’m
Hoping to find a little oasis for a few days in middle of nowhere the it’s different than saying I’m visiting Florida and hope to spend time at beach

Not correct my first sit was several states away and I can’t say enough good things about my sit. But some sits I see they are to close to sit date to get reasonable air fair etc that it’s disheartening wishing there was some alternative to it

Which is think are reasonable I am
Not sure I be comfortable using the car for so many reasons, but the pick up is great especially if traveling to place where airport is quite a distance

I thought it was not allowed why I
Mentions it

I wondered in some that the same thing. I think there is a line where expectations of a THS exchange are not reasonable but the line is fuzzy. What everyone views as reasonable is different. Let’s face it we all in it to save money and bring our own expectations.

Exactly an option a sweetener, not required but sit that say are difficult to get to or last minute not saying full Travel Costs either.
I see some We will be willing to Pick
You up from Airport.

Exactly this !!

I do both local before I joined this site and honest I am not sure a sit in which I was going as part of a vacation would I feel comfortable being paid for and exactly why I joined for Travel it’s been a win win. Local
Clearly it’s a job not a barter

Marion yes why I think there should be offers not saying people have to offer especially on the ones who have more
Heavy duty requirements

I’m
Not talking full travel costs or every sit but sometimes an incentive especially if a last minute sit, example I used it closer to date some types of travel gets more expensive.
Example I seen some “we will
Be willing to pick up at airport “

Yes exactly those types of sits because I am open for that nice “home stay” vacation and not do the tourist thing but we all know if you not close to a major hub is can be a challenge

I agree with you. I feel like if you’ve done a good job taking care of someone’s pets, you shouldn’t be judged for Not being a perfect Cleaning Lady. I do this because I love animals and I always treat them with lots of love and attention, but I am frustrated to be judged At all Because I didn’t clean a certain way or put something back in the perfect spot. How much money would it cost them to have a cleaning lady come or pay a professional pet sitter??

Hello @RR12345 !
I’m catching up on threads here, so I understand this may not be relevant to you anymore, but yes I was a paid local house sitter for 4 years prior to joining TH - it is a thing and it can be done, although I think it works best if you intent to do it locally, so that you can become folks go-to house sitter.

So I was a paid sitter before anything else and I do agree, esp. if you are not doing it for a vacation necessarily (as we do not) - that taking care of people’s homes and pets are an invaluable service! We have local clients who book us out seasons in advance because of the peace of mind we provide in house sitting for them.

We had home owners offer once, but declined. We feel like we should pay for our own travel, just as we feel the homeowners should pay for utilities while we sit.

My current hosts offered airfare and I accepted. Otherwise, I wouldn’t do the sit and their skittish cats would be worse off, because I wouldn’t have returned to their city at my own expense so soon. Because they offered, it’s win, win, win.

Of course, each sitter and host decides what works best for themselves.

We actually did do that once because a homeowner had an emergency and asked if we would return a week later. We were already on another sit so my husband went while I stayed. Since we were only doinging it to help them out, we would have rather stayed together, we felt it was fair for them to pay for the travel expenses. They were very thoughtful and left money for food too, but my husband didn’t take it since he would have to eat anyway.

Hi @RR12345 I’m circling back to this thread to say yes you most certainly can do paid house sitting. I was a paid local house sitter first for 4+ years before hopping onto TH to fill in my gaps.

“In practice, sitters only get invited to local sits.” That’s not true.
