What happens to sitter’s airfare if pet parent cancels?
Sitter has to pay for the airfare anyway or change the flight dates or get a credit or a refund. Hosts aren’t liable. #planb

Probably nothing, there is no impact.
Pet Parents may elect to contribute to airfare but there is no requirement under THS rules.
THS Sit Cancellation Insurance does not cover travel costs. And only applies to Premium members and where cancellation is within 14 days of start date. And various other quirks.
We have had two Pet Parents cancel international housesits on the start date. Stuff happens in life and they each had their reason. Unquestionably caused us concern until we determined Plan B. In one case then THS Sit Cancellation Insurance was eligible, to cover alternative accommodation costs but not travel costs. One (of several) quirks of THS Sit Cancellation Insurance is that alternative accommodation has to be within 20 miles of sit location … so international housesitter has to complete flight to be location of pet parent even though sit has been cancelled. Limited coverage, that could be greatly improved by THS. If you’re Premium member and not familiar with THS Sit Cancellation Insurance then recommend read terms.

Zip, zero, nada. That’s why you need a refundable ticket or a plan B. But if you have a premium membership you can at least get drunk in a free airport lounge while swearing under your breath.

THS is purely a matching service- all other agreements are down to the HO/sitter. It’s sensible to get refundable tkts as a sitter (yes more expensive) or have a contingency fund to pay for accommodation whilst searching for a last minute sit at the location. Premium membership ’might’ payout but it’s pretty strict on the criteria. Make sure you know the details of the claim process. Follow it to the letter.
