When a pet I’ve sat for dies

Just had a pet die. So sad. There were 2 cats, 18 yo both. Last month, one passed, before the sit. Yesterday this one was good. Eating well. Small meals, 6 x a day. Today, something was off. Then it ate first thing, after resisting. Then something was off. Around 11 am, took it inside to room, where it sleeps, he had forgotten about litter boxes in old age. I laid with it and pet it. Did some videos for HOs. Then took the dogs out and came back and cat had died. So sad. Only knew it for a few days, but sad. Glad I was petting it for its final hours. Waiting to hear from HOs who are overseas. What to do with the body.

OMG i would be SOOO sad if that happened to me as a sitter :broken_heart: . I have such a soft heart for animals that I would be sad for days if I were in your shoes. It is nice that you were there with him, giving him love for some of his last moments. As a HO with a 13 year old dog I think about this stuff (I have a “What if” problem re my animals or people close to me  ). Thankfully she’s quite spunky and healthy still.

Glad you have a dog to keep you company for the remainder of your sit. :blue_heart:

Thanks. 2 dogs. When we are on the trails off leash, the 1 yo is like the wind, running everywhere. I keep yelling “this way” so it knows where I am. But they know about the cat. They won’t go downstairs, where I have the cat. Need to take it to the vet today.

Years ago our 18.5 year old cat died almost two years after radiation treatment for a thyroid issue. The treatment involves a 10 day stay at a facility until the radition is less detectable so the specialized practice really gets to know the cats. I told them about the cat’s death – which was unrelated to the cured thyroid issue – because the cat was still enrolled in a study. They sent me a great photo from his time at the facility in a card and mentioned a donation made to some “feline fund.” Anyway, I still have the card up on a bookcase 8 years later. No idea how much the donation was and don’t care.
