RIP and honouring pets we’ve sat for

I

I would like to celebrate the life of Trevor an indoor cat who lived with my neighbour until the age of 19, and who I sat for on three occasions whilst she was away. The neighbour gave me a lovely reference on my joining THS and before I had my 1st official sit. During Covid on our WhatsApp App group (for our block of 7 flats)- we all made up stories about Trevor the ‘Detective Cat’ and it kept us hugely entertained…. Trevor would sit on my neighbour’s balcony observing the comings and goings of us all and silently accumulating his detective reports. Trevor would sometimes patrol the stairwell or occasionally be willing to venture outdoors into the shared garden- he was simply gathering evidence! We’ll miss this beautiful and mysterious black cat who we all loved.

Lovely to hear how a pet bought a community together .

If you still have the WhatsApp stories they could be printed and made into a little book and given to the neighbour as a memory .

I’d need to track back to March 2020 though….

Update: I spent a fun hour or two collating all the old messages about ‘Trevor the Cat Detective’ into a word document and sent it to the HO. She was very appreciative and we both had a laugh at some of the creative ideas that we’d come up with during this time.

Aww RIP Trevor  he was absolutely beautiful!

EDIT: I’ve added this discussion to our “Featured Topics” as I’d really like to have a place where we can honour those that have crossed rainbow bridge.

RIP Trevor…and so nice that you thought to start this thread.

For myself, I’d like to honor sweet and gentle Fitzy, a soft-coated Wheaton terrier — my second pet sit on THS. A gentler & sweeter soul was never born. Sadly, he was already starting to show some signs of ill health when I came to stay, and subsequent investigations concluded that he had cancer. But I was so very happy that he got to have several more months with his loving family upon their return.

Sweet, sweet boy - he filled & broke my heart in equal measure. :mending_heart:

Holly the heart dog

Died at almost 17. I didn’t meet her through THS, but took care of her multiple times. The happiest dog ever. Loved life even when she couldn’t hear and hardly see and had trouble walking. Sweetest companion.

Pluto.

The dog of wonder. He has the absolute best boy. We took care of him twice, even celebrated his last birthday on Earth. Sadly, we couldn’t manage to see him one last time for a third. It broke our hearts completely until this day. Even though we did manage to take care of his brother this year, it was so different and strange for everyone having only one crazy wiener in the home. Pluto was one of the friendliest, loyal, loving, caring, treat-addicted, napping-lover and dearest doggos we’ve ever got the chance to sit for and met.

Now he’s immortalised in the owners’ (our family now) forever. It took me the entire sit — 4 weeks and a half to be exact — to finish this piece. We love you Pluto

Skipper was my 3rd sit. Loved sitting him. Took him in the car on adventures. RIP Skipper.

On this sit I regularly walk the dog through a graveyard. The rules are the dog must always be on the lead and stick to the designated paths and avoid peeing on the graves and any poos should be promptly picked up and suitably disposed of.

As I walked through for the umpteenth time I spotted a grave in the distance and decided to get a closer view of it on my own, leaving the pet at home. I was intrigued by the grave as I saw there was a dog statue that seemed to be guarding it.

It was very sad to see the grave and I wondered what the story was. It appeared two people, very much in love, had died together. No dates. Not many details but their names of course. I wondered whether the dog also died in an accident too. The graveside appeared to have fresh flowers but these had been scattered, possibly by the wind.

Love is eternal offered the only positive hope.

We are on a sit in Kent UK . We visited Chartwell the family home and garden of Sir Winston Churchill- in a shady corner of the gardens we discovered these graves for the family pets .

We recently heard from pet parents that Logan, a wonderful old boy that we looked after last year, has died. They let us know because they know he occupies a special place in our hearts (and he always will). RIP darling boy.

That was very thoughtful of them.

There’s a pet cemetery in the walled garden at Preston Manor including the grave of George the Royal Pavilion cat who famously greeted QEIi at the entrance when she visited the palace….a totally random event as cats can’t be relied on to do stuff like this.

Totally agree. We got on with them very well, they’re genuinely lovely people.

Logan was a rescue who had spent too many years of his life waiting for a family. He found a brilliant one, and was truly loved in his later years. He was the best boy.

We’ve just learned that Sofie, a cat we’ve cared for 3 times, has died. She was a gentle, communicative, tactile, darling girl, and we loved her, so -despite her great age - this news has saddened us, immeasurably. It’s hard to reconcile that we won’t see her again, or hear her gravelly miaow in greeting.

I guess it goes to show that, house sitting is not just about the nuts and bolts of caring for pets, we sitters also form emotional attachments with them; we give - and receive - love.

How gracious of the HOs to let us know about Sofie’s passing, and her last hours.

RIP, sweet Sofie.

My sister’s sweet Mimi, the matriarch of her chiahuahua family, crossed rainbow bridge a couple of days ago and we’re all very sad. She was a very feisty girl, very protective of her family, and she gifted them with some adorable offspring. She was very vocal, and I’ll miss the sassy yapper a lot!
