Anyone house sat a Vizsla?

This is the first time we have house sat a Vizsla, were a bit apprehensive but what a wonderful dog, although he can be a bit obsessed with you!
This one won’t walk more than 20 feet from you off lead, comes immediately upon calling, walks on a lead like no other dog we have experienced, wants to sit on your lap, constantly talks to you, not a bad bone in his body. What an experience!!

Vizslas are nicknamed “Velcro “ dogs @Twogreys as you are finding out

No, but I’d love to! I keep suggesting to THS that it be made possible to search for sits with key words, but it hasn’t happened yet. ‘Vizsla’ would definitely be one of my searches.

@Becca I’m not sure that would be the best idea, looking at it from an owners point of view? I understand that people have their favourite breeds, I have a couple of favs myself. However, I would prefer not to have an advertised sit bypassed, simply because of the breed of my dog.
I personally think that if dogs were listed by breed & sitters only wanted to sit for their favoured breeds, they might filter out the others :slightly_smiling_face:

Edited to say
That, I was looking at the suggestion regarding filters, purely from a HO’s point of view, however after hearing the replies from sitters, I can understand why being able to filter for breed, size & number of animals, would be a good thing.

Of course people filter out certain breeds. Not everyone wants to sit large dogs or dogs that need a lot of exercise or small yappy dogs etc etc. We do the filtering anyway when we read the advert and pass if the particular breed doesn’t fit.

Hi @LucyCharm

Sitters are filtering beyond the current filter parameters anyway - how else do we narrow down which sits to apply to? I’m sure that you do the same as a home owner processing applications.

I think it would be great fun to be able to search for a key word, eg. ‘Vizsla’, and see the various sits that popped up all over the world. Other people might want to search for ‘swimming pool’, or ‘terrapin’, or ‘vegetable patch’, for example.

I’m really interested in finding out more about certain breeds (with a view to one day finally getting a pooch of my own), and THS has so far been a great way of doing that. It would just be that bit easier with the ability to search for a specific breed.

I see what you’re saying & yes, I see it makes sense. I stand corrected :slightly_smiling_face:

@Newt
Thanks for the explanation, I see that now :face_with_peeking_eye::wink:

I would also like to be able to filter for just one dog

Yes! I have just come from walking this ball of energy, Hunter. He is my friends’ dog and I have house sat for them with their older vizsla before. They told me they were velcro dogs, and it us true

Hunter’s ability to fetch is incredible, but he doesn’t like to release the ball at the end. That’s why I brought two ball launchers on my second visit!

Yes, twice and he was gorgeous. Super chilled. Very affectionate. Prone to ear and eye infections and a lot of scratching. Good off the lead. A total pleasure to look after and happy to be a pseudo large cat. Meet Pippo of Çeşme :tr:

Always loved meeting Vizslas over the years and THS gave us the chance to look after one.
Throughly enjoyed it and he was really good off lead also, and loved being in water (clean or dirty )
Strangely, the wire haired are bigger than the smooth coated.

Isn’t that the whole point? People match up to what suits them?

This is a great idea. I agree.

I would love to meet one.

We already do. Even if the breed is not mentioned, I run the pictures through dog scan to identify them.
I would also like the size/weight to be mentioned. It is not always easy to figure it out from pictures.

We’ve sat five - four smooth and one wire haired. Fabulous and affectionate dogs. Strong and VERY fast - they need to run so plenty of space a good thing. Usually good recall ( unless chasing a hare !) and great for ball games. Be prepared for good walks !

I wish - after five snipers apply, the queue is autopaused and can only be unpaused after rejecting an application. Not much option to narrow things down…

I’d be ticked off if snipers applied too

I sat one. He was just as most people have described: velcro dog, very affectionate, highly energetic, infatigable fetch player. Except he didn’t have a good recall and pulled on the leash but that wasn’t his fault, poor thing, his owners were really inconsistent with his training.

Aaargh! The dreaded five-sniper rule raises its head again. I’m not sure that anyone likes it, or really benefits from it, and it must feel pretty limiting to a home owner. I certainly wouldn’t like my pool of potential sits to be limited to a choice of just five, (even if they were all with Vizslas).
