Here is my present sit with a pup who loves nothing better than a carrot! I love the way he reminds me when he thinks it’s time for a TREAT at his feet!
Have fed carrots as treats to numerous dogs @Highfive. A great healthy treat.
Current sit with 3 English bulls - 2 like carrots, 1 doesn’t.
Prior sit with a rat terrier and a beagle both of who love the ‘core’/base of romaine lettuce - but not the leaves.
I once lived with a weirmariner who loved brocolli stems, cauliflower, and the membrane separating the sections of grapefruit (but not oranges). Before the days of digital cameras so no pictures.
We sat for dog dogs who shared a fence with horses. When the horses came over to get a carrot the dogs would have theirs too.
Many dogs I’ve encountered have liked carrots. I sat a senior one who was blind and deaf, and he still enjoyed them. Problem was, he chewed super slowly with his few remaining teeth, and he didn’t realize that the other dog was stealing from his share.
I started cutting up the baby carrots, so he could chew more easily. I was very careful — I didn’t want to end up telling emergency room doctors that I had injured myself splitting carrots for a dog.
At another sit, that dog loved carrots, as well as greens. Like I could scatter salad mix on the floor and she’d gobble it up like a piranha. She was senior and in terrific shape, probably because she’d grown up on a healthy diet.
The sweet blind and deaf guy, who would routinely demand treats and knew exactly when mealtimes were and bark, bark, bark accordingly:
The piranha, who was full of sass and would eat a field of salad if she had a chance:
Stuart the Dacshund loves to partake of fresh blueberries from the numerous bushes in his backyard. Although the web cautions not to have ‘too many’, I suspect he exceeds his daily quota.
Stuart is adorable! Great that he likes blueberries.
They’re supposed to be good for dogs, but so far I’ve not encountered a dog who likes them. I’ve had two who got homemade meals cooked by their humans (I defrosted and heated up for the dogs) and the guys would eat everything else and leave the blueberries in or around their bowls. Their humans had told me that they’d probably do that, even though they otherwise cleared their dishes, including the prescription pills I mixed in.
Separately, this thread reminded me of this uber healthy dog I sat. The only “treats” he got were kibble. He was so sweet and well trained, he’d show himself into his kennel every night for one piece of kibble. And every morning, he’d get one piece of kibble for coming out of his kennel. And even during walks, he’d stop before crossing the street and he’d get one piece of kibble. He got maybe 10 pieces a day as treats, total, and just kibble for meals. He was so easy to love and he got excited just over a piece of kibble.
The secret to a happy life! Be happy in the small things! A treat is a treat! Love this example and what greater gift than keeping him slim and healthy! As well as happy!
Great way to go!
On long housesits, especially if I’m solo sitting, I tend to up the exercise and try to eat sparingly. This way I usually lose weight and it’s easier to do dieting when I’m on my own.
Yesterday Sable, the dog I am sitting at the moment, felt sure it was time for a healthy treat.. yes another one! We spent the time at the virtual table together ! No weight gain just waiting!
