Oof, that is bad luck for sure.
In a prior post they indicated they were in-between full time housing and applying for academic programs, so yes they are full time sitters at the moment.
I see more and more terrible stories. Now about a sitter in Michigan (not necessaribly THS) who disappeared with the very cute little dog: https://www.bringreikohome.com/
Sounds like someone might have stolen the dog. Not sure how that’s relevant here.
Hi Jenny,
I am out of the house. Both of us agreed to cancel the sit. Can you please email me regarding how to do that?
Thanks.
My phone broke the day before the sit – and I’d love to get a new one, but you have to be a resident of France to do that.
I’ve left the sit now and am taking deep breaths.
I think that is a requirement to get a new phone/internet provider. It should still be possible to buy a new (or second-hand) phone and use the sim-card that you had in your old phone.
Thanks for the update @proflangley - I’ve passed that over to the team and asked one of our Membership Services colleagues to help you.
That’s interesting, never knew that.
Fantastic. I’m so glad to hear you’re out of the house. That is so great. Yes. Deep breaths.
@proflangley If you don’t have a phone, how are you communicating on here? Laptop?
and sorry, but who goes to a remote sit without a car? and arrives 6 days early.?
you have to take some responsibility for your current predicament
I have done that, by train and bicycle. And I have also arrived several days early, when the HO was anxious about me getting delayed.
And I have been on Couchsurfing, both as a host and a guest. Then 6 days was not extraordinary.
Her behaviour demands that you contact THS as your health and safety are in jeapordy.
rather you than me
For women who sit solo, going to a rural sit without a phone and a car can be riskier than for a man, unfortunately. Everyone has their own comfort levels, but personally I would never do that. Many women wouldn’t.
Beyond safety, what happens if there’s a pet emergency say at night. Riding a bike to potentially get to urgent care (often not as convenient after business hours, because of limited locations for services) seems dicey as well, especially with a sick or injured pet.
Right now there is a minor blizzard going on here in the Netherlands. Several roads are closed for cars.
A few months ago, I brought the cat back from the vet to our place here by bicycle. No problem. With the wintry conditions this week, I have been walking to supermarkets etc.
I have hosted several solo female Couchsurfing guests at my place. There are many women who do that. One guest had cycled the world on her own. She had just come back from a trip all the way around Africa: https://womenscyclingguide.com/
Not saying no women are risk-takers with safety. They tend to be atypical.
WOW! What an odd situation to be in and the circumstances could have definitely deteriorated. Glad to hear the ordeal is over. Lessons learned here about ALWAYS putting your own safety as a number one priority. I won’t rehash all that has been said about phones, cancelling, red flags, over stepping boundaries, and you subsequently reaching out here and with THS for help. However, because no reviews were exchanged, now the next sitter won’t have clue what they are getting themselves into for future sits. Did this individual have prior reviews???
It isn’t extraordinary at all to arrive somewhere six days early if that’s what the host wants. I have been places up to three days ahead of time, because the host had a rescue dog that needed time to get used to me.
Also, if you’re traveling overseas, then you’re not gonna have a car. And you’re gonna rely on train and bicycle so that is not extraordinary either.
