Cat scratch disease

A really weird question I know but I was wondering if anyone has ever had Cat Scratch Disease from a cat on a sit. I do recall someone mentioning on a post here that they had had it and not a good experience so would love to hear if anyone has. I currently have it from a sit in December, it’s ongoing!

@ziggy I’m so sorry to hear that you have an ongoing issue. That sounds pretty nasty. I hope it’s moving in the right direction. I haven’t had that issue, but on one sit a cat left some deep wounds on my hand and it blew up very badly. I thought I might have to leave the sit to get medical attention, but my body rose to the occasion and fought it off itself.
Hope your problem gets fully resolved soon.

Thank you Edith for your kind words. I sort medical attention immediately after the bite and scratch, having a tetanus injection and strong antibiotics. All seemed ok until this lump on my hand started growing. Just had it cut out as I thought it may have been a skin cancer but it is from the scratch. It is now infected again and back on the antibiotics. It’s going from bad to worse and looks horrid! Another member had the same thing happen so I was hoping to hear from her as to how things eventually turned out. I understand this can get quite nasty if not treated properly. Great to hear yours did not progress and your body fought it. Mine did originally but has now turned again. Thanks for your concern.

Hi @ziggy like @Edith I’m so sorry to hear about your condition and the complications you are experiencing I do hope the effects of the condition clear up and you get back to full and good health.

CSD is very rare which makes your situation even more unfortunate. My daughter is an ER & Critical Care Vet and daughter in law a Vet Feline specialist, both have many battle scars from treating our furry friends and have fortunately avoided any serious consequences, given their profession they do maintain protocols around disease protection of course.

I do hope that you are soon back to feeling 100% once again.

Thank you Angela for your kind words also and for the added information. Pathology is currently looking further into the biopsy of the lump that was cut out so I’m hoping everything comes back negative. I am definitely going to be contacting the homeowners though in regards to this as I would hate for a child to have been attacked as I was and end up far worse off. I will wait for pathology results first. I know these things happen, just bad luck I guess. Thanks again

My mom got a deep scratch on a housesit and ended up in hospital for 6 nights. Luckily it fully healed. I really feel for you, it being an ongoing issue.

Oooh that is terrible about your Mum! Glad it was resolved finally, though obviously distressing for her. I am just glad that I took immediate action when it happened as I think it could have turned out like it did for your Mum, though now the issue continues, maybe not as bad as it could have though.

@ziggy I am so sorry to hear that. Thank you for sharing as it is a very helpful topic, not common but does happen and great to know what to do when it does.

My mother-in-law got scratched and bitten badly by a cat last year and ended up in hospital. She was treated straight away with antibiotics and all healed up apart from her hand swelled up considerably and she needed different antibiotics to treat that. It took 3/4 weeks for the swelling to fully go down and for her to be able to use her hand fully.

So I am really sorry to hear that happened to you and know how stressful it can be. I am sending well wishes for a quick recovery and as you said early treatment is super helpful.

@botvot Glad your mum was okay too!

Hi @ziggy. Sorry to hear of your issue. Hope it heals quickly.
You know what in 40 years of looking after many cats and helping a catch and neut/spay operation in Lanzarote Ive never heard of this condition although I know animals can carry some bad bacteria in their mouths.

I am sorry to hear what you are going through. I have not gotten it from a sit but years ago I got an infection when a friend’s cat attacked me. This is a GREAT reminder to all to take seriously any bites and scratches from cats when you are sitting. Early antibiotics is often the key. When I am overseas I try to have some prescribed by my practitioner before I go.

@ziggy I wish you the very best — it sounds mighty tough what you’re going through. Make sure you’re getting the best medical care you can. Stay strong.

Thanks to one and all for the kind words and feedback, seems I may have come out of it better than a few who have written about their or their loved ones experiences. I’m hoping mine ends soon also and I do hope, as others have said, not to take these bites and scratches lightly as they obviously can have far reaching consequences that we didn’t realise. Seek medical attention immediately after any bite or scratch, this can get far worse, particularly in anyone that is immunocompromised.
