Changing my mind

Hi,
I have applied for 2 sits, one of which I would much prefer.
My second choice has asked me to accept their sit.
What do I do if I am in this difficult situation.
Once I accept my second choice sit can I then cancel it to accept my first choice sit if I get offered it?
Don’t want to waste anyone’s time or let anyone down x
Thanks all.

Don’t accept it if you don’t want it. Reach out to the HO of the sit you want and let them know you prefer theirs but have another offer. Presumably you’ve already spoken to the first choice HO, right?

Accepting a sit and then cancelling it for something better would make you an unreliable sitter and not one that HOs should trust or offer sits to.

Absolutely not. Very bad form to even consider that

Yeah, the fact that they’re even considering it is a huge red flag in how they’re going to handle their sits.

It’s not a difficult situation at all. You don’t cancel on one homeowner when a better deal comes along. You make a commitment when accepting a sit and it’s unethical to do what you are suggesting. You make a choice and stand by it and by cancelling the first sit, you ARE wasting someone’s time - the first homeowner you accepted and all the other sitters who applied and were denied, who could have taken it had you not.

How would you like it if a host accepted you and then ditched you for another sitter?

Thanks, good idea, won’t let anyone down. X

I just wondered if there might be an accepted rule eg a 2 day period when it is allowed that you can cancel one to accept another.
New to site so still checking this out.
Want to do things properly, would definitely not mess people around or let anyone down.
Thanks for reply x

Definitely not - your word should be your bond.
If you have any doubt about a sit don’t accept. There will be plenty of other opportunities.

No there isn’t, never accept anything unless you are 100% sure you want to go through with it. THS has a really good name, because of the level of commitment and respect between owners and sitters.

If you’ve waited for more than 2-3 days for the other one to accept you, then it is likely they are holding out for someone potentially better, or who has more reviews. So if that’s the case, I would switch off to your first choice, because your second choice liked you more.

No. It is expected that people on this site are actually going to do what they say they’ll do. And those who don’t are held in contempt by others in the community as unreliable at best, blatant liars at worst.

Hi there, it’s not okay, but I think it was fair to ask as you are new. Have a great first sit.

Great, thanks, it’s definitely not in the spirit of things is it, I really wouldn’t let anyone down.

It’s absolutely fine to ask - which you’ve done. We all have questions when we first start sitting, and even sometimes when we’ve been sitting for years!
Hope you enjoy your sit!

How long ago did you apply to the first Sit (your preferred one)?

Have you heard from the preferred Owner?

If it has been several days and the preferred Owner has not even responded to your application, say “Adios” and move on! You may never hear from them.

If you have had a video chat with the preferred Owner, then send them a message that you would like a final answer.

Don’t leave the non-preferred Owner hanging for days!

This happened to us 3 times for a sit. I have their names and they won’t be a sitter for me. I highly doubt they would apply again. As a HO, I would never cancel a sitter once I confirmed their sit for another sitter.

Thanks for advice.
One has pulled out from needing someone anyway so not a problem at the moment x

Thanks very much, I am getting some good advice on here x

I think you’ve answered your own question at the end. There have been a few sitters cancelling their sits because they’ve found a better sit. If you don’t fancy the one you’ve been offered then don’t accept it, but something about it must have attracted you…. If you get the first choice sit then accept it and don’t continue looking for other sits.

I think the straightforward manner is to immediately contact the preferred sit before acting on sit2 and tell them that you have the offer and that you do not wish to impose on them but you need a response because you would prefer to come and sit for them. This will get a quick response if this sit is indeed a good one.
