Accepting a sit

What is advice for if you like both sits, how do you graciously say no without offending the owner?

Should the HS be the one to both verbally offer and push that request button for hire? When the HS says they are waiting on me and then I hear nothing on their side - is this normal? I had to say I was interested which triggered them to place an acceptance but I’m conf as to the order of things. Thx

Once a host decides to choose you for a sit, they have to push the invitation from their side. Then you just accept from your side by pushing a button. You usually get an email notice that you’ve been chosen, which prompts you to accept.

Some hosts or sitters miss this or don’t understand how it works. If that happens and the sit happens anyway, then you both will not be able to review each other. And presumably you’re both risking any insurance-type coverage not being in effect during the sit. That presumably would be open to interpretation by THS or its insurer, depending on what coverage is claimed by host or sitter.

BTW, once you’ve accepted an invitation to sit, you’ll get an email like this, making it official. And the sit will appear on your dashboard as confirmed, as an Upcoming Sit.

If you have been officially offered two sits it is your choice to either accept or to decline with the answer-buttons for this purpose. Only the host can initiate the process of confirming a sit.

If you have not been offered a sit formally but «only» have applied for multiple sits you can simply withdraw your application on your dashboard.

Sitters are encouraged to apply for multiple sits and both sitters and hosts can decide not to go forward for whatever reason before the sit is confirmed. So no need to feel that you hurt someone. This is just part of finding good matches. Some prefer to send a personal note when they withdraw an application or decline an invitation. It is nice to do if you want to.

If you like both sits, just be honest but polite. Say something like, “I’m really torn because both opportunities sound amazing, but I’ve decided to go with another one this time. Thank you so much for understanding!” As for the HS, they should definitely offer the request, but it’s also okay for you to show interest. If they’re waiting on you and you hear nothing, it’s normal for them to be slow to respond, but always better to ask for clarity if you’re unsure about the next steps.

We’d had a face to face with our last sitter who was very enthusiastic, we invited her to sit but she forgot to click on the accept button. I had to remind her. I guess life gets in the way sometimes.

I’m finding Chat GPT useful in situations where I want to be tactful but deliver a negative message.

Thank you all for responding - appreciate it. You feel bad declining knowing the sits are both amazing.
