Counting the plants…

When I start a sit I make a point of counting all the indoor plants that way when watering I don’t miss any, what’s your approach? One sit we did in Australia had 51 plants indoors, it was 43° with AC running most other day so almost daily watering required.

I just water the ones I see then usually find some when I’m about to leave!

The places I sit rarely have many plants, so no biggie — just check each room / bathroom.

I once sat a home with a conservatory full of plants, plus seedlings in a sheltered unit outside. I just remembered the last I watered and continued on.

On one sit, there was a planter I missed, because it was behind a car. Once the dog happened by and I spotted the planter, I watered and pruned the dead parts. Told my hosts and they didn’t care, said they replaced that planter display seasonally anyway.

There is a saying, bringing the outdoors in. They nailed it!

I once watered a fake plant. It was at the entry. Made to have even slight yellow leaves on some to look real. They did a good job. Then there were 8 real plants in the house. The 2nd time I went to water I felt the fake plant and realized it was fake.

I’ve had to feel certain plants before watering — so far have avoided watering fake ones.

We have approximately 150 plants in our house, some of which cost a small fortune! We’ve not had anyone sit from THS yet but my partners friend has and I know he hates watering the plants! That said, we live in the uk so don’t generally need that much

Wow :open_mouth: I hope you have a plant meter. My secret weapon for my own plants, and all my pots are labelled with the number at which they need water and how much to put on. So if I do need someone to come in and water, it’s plants-by-number.

THS should consider a separate icon/category for plants (indoor plants, specifically, which need watering). This job can take longer than any other tasks (pet tasks, garbage/recycling, mail/packages). Maybe it deserves its own category!

I once did a sit where they had scads of plants, both inside and out. So many indoor plants that they used an app to remember when to do what.

That definitely made it easier to keep track of all the tasks, but the app called for misting, dusting, and a periodic shower for various plants, which made for a lot of plant maintenance time. My parents were horticulturists with about the same number of indoor plants, but we never gave the plants nearly that much pampering.

We also had a heat wave while I was there, and the owners had quite a few seedlings outside. At times it felt like I spent more time on plant care (and not getting the nice wood surfaces wet) than on pet care. But the owners and pet were wonderful, so it actually was a great sit.

I did a sit that had 180 indoor plants - a surprise on arrival. A few were very expensive so I stressed about those. I’m good with plants so it was fine and it was a great sit. But there are people who just can’t seem to keep plants alive, so hosts might be very disappointed if they come home to a lot of dead plants. I typically expect a few plants, but hosts should really include it in the listing if they have a lot of plants.

@Seniorsitter I watered a fake plant before too. Some look so real!

Literally a game changer and we have one too! Makes house sitting plants SO much easier. Amazing how many people overwater their plants. We have arrived at some sits and they are a 10/10 wet-very wet. Told to water every other day or so and some aren’t even dried out after a week!

Exactly! And some people aren’t good with plants. When the listing only says “water indoor plants” and you show up and there are 10-20+…it can become daunting!

@Couple_travels_fulltime yup. Biggest killer of house plants is overwatering. Every time I sell a plant division on the community marketplace page I show people the meter and recommend they get one. If I recall, I bought one for an HO on one sit as a little parting gift.
